Everyone that knows boxing knew that floyd would not only win this fight but that it would be lopsided. Marquez did ask for the fight so that leaves 3 possibilities in my mind. 1. he thought he could win 2. he knew he couldn't but wanted the payday 3. he didn't think that Floyd would accept such a ridiculous challenge so he thought it would sound good to just say it. Which do you think it was.
Great fighters like Marquez always believes in themselves. Hell yea he thought he could win and become the #1 Mexican fighter of all ****in times. He still has a chance to achieve that goal.
He thought he had a chance at pulling out an upset, but knew it was going to be very difficult. He also knew he was going to get a great payday for his efforts win, lose, or draw.
Of course he thought he could win. He had arguably beat the #1 p4p champ twice. PBF just showed he was on another level.
I can't name an elite fighter that has ever fought that didn't think he could win a fight he took. Even Michael Spinks felt he had a chance against Tyson.
I think he was cashing out. He's a top fighter but he's been chasing a money fight his whole career. He was chasing Pacquiao up in weight for the rubber match and instead found himself taking a huge purse to fight Mayweather. I hope he goes back down in weight, pads his wallet a bit and calls it a day in a year or two. He's not young and he doesn't need to be fighting anymore.
