When potential in the amateurs doesn't show off in the pros, even when given every chance, I think it's fair to say that he didn't have stand a chance in the pros.

The answers are obvious. Another question is did Joe & Marvis seriously believe Marvis could successfully emulate Joe or were they just trying to quickly cash in on the Frazier name?

He was good and had the potential to be great, but as mentioned he wasn't anything like his father in terms of both physicality and mentality. Joe grew up poor in the rural South, he had to make a name for himself to succeed and that determination carried onto his career. Marvis grew up with wealth and had the option to get a good education and go into different sports over boxing and its risks, Joe was initially against Marvis going into boxing as well.

This might be hard for people to accept but: He had a good career, proving he had potential.
It wasn't just potential. No, he just wasn't built like his dad though. He didn't have that kind of potential. I seem to remember this anecdote that basically sums up Marvis, where a venue owner recounted meeting him and how polite he was and that he was the only fighter who ever thanked him for letting him fight in his place, and how nice of a young man he seemed to be...which was how he knew he was not meant to be a great fighter. No ego. No vanity. Not built like that. Good people. Good athlete. Good boxer. But not the stuff of champions, in the temperament department. It's one of the rare times you can use some chip on the shoulder. Marvis didn't have it.
