It didn't require him to sign with Top Rank though. That was just a sweetener, to get him to accept the deal.

If Mayweather wanted a one fight deal, he would have had it, no question.

It's funny reading people tear apart Margarito, as a reason why Mayweather beating him would have been a formality. Maybe he would have schooled Margo, but doesn't that make it worse?

No, it was a 3 or 4 fight deal with Arum.

Arum said while Mayweather would have taken the $8 million to fight Margarito, he asked for a $10 million guarantee to fight opponents such as Miguel Cotto and Ricky Hatton, when Arum was only willing to guarantee $7 million.

Arum agreed that the split with Mayweather was not on bad terms like their brief breakup last year. In fact, Arum said, "We intend to be back together. Everything with this was honorable and good. I had offered him numbers [for a multi-fight contract extension] that were livable. His expectations are in the stratosphere. He was entitled to buy me out, and he did. We decided this was the best way to handle it. He is a free agent. We have agreed to work with each other [in the future]."

That's what both sides were negotiating, a multi fight deal. Arum wasn't strong arming him into being tied down to Top Rank, if he fought Margarito. A deal was discussed were Mayweather would rejoin Top Rank and Mayweather was promised big fights.

I don't think there's anything more to it and if Mayweathee wanted a one fight deal, he would have got it, just like he would against Pacquiao.

I agree that the idea of a multi-fight deal didn't make great sense, but we know $8m was offered for a Baldomir and Margarito fight. The only excuse for him picking Baldomir, is that he would have been tied down to a contract but this is untrue. It was just one way of Arum trying to appease Mayweather, by offering him a deal worth, in total, massive money. It was an alternative but another alternative was a one fight deal against Margarito which would have made him bigger money, a bigger cut against at De La Hoya and more respect. Crucially, it would have been a one fight deal andeveeythinh after could go like Mayweather wanted.

The multi-fight deal was not the only option. It was an option, probably one of three realistic options. The other two being a one-off fight with Margarito and a fight with Baldomir.

I'm on my phone, but I remember a quote from Arum on BS around the time. It's getting pretty far back though.

Assuming it's no longer on there, what would it even prove anyway? A one fight deal was offered, so it's not like Arum wasn't open to that. We know for a fact it was offered at one point and it's only logical to assume it would have been at a different stage. It's just that Arum wanted to cash in on Floyd.

Actually he did not call him out in public this was being worked on behind the scenes. Margarito would have made more money fighting floyd but ducked.
