Did Mayweather fight a more brawling type of fight against Cotto....

    ...because he wanted to make up for the Ortiz fight? I've had this debate with my brother awhile back and I'm curious to see who was closer to the truth. I'm of the belief that he fought a more crowd pleasing fight because he wanted to make up for the way the Ortiz fight ended. My brother is of the belief he fought that way simply because his legs aren't what they use to be. Now I know there are a lot of other factors as to why the fight turned out the way it did but, if you had to choose between the two, which would it be?

    I'd say his legs aren't what they used to be. Watch the Ortiz fight, and although Ortiz didn't land to many big shots.. Mayweather just couldn't move like he used to. I don't think he'd lay on the ropes like Ali and let Cotto hit him (while rolling with it) if he didn't have too. Also, a bit funny, but just look at the Broner/ Mayweather basketball video posted. Broner busted a move on him, and Floyd don't even try to make it down court.
    Guess we'll find more out against Guerrero. I don't think Guerrero has got a chance, but I don't see Floyd taking him out to early, Guerrero is a southpaw, rugged, and willing to go life and death. We'll see how Floyd moves against him.

    I dont think he wanted to make up for the Ortiz fight, Floyd is okay boring the **** out of fans he didnt do this for us. What you saw was a slower Floyd who is now in his mid 30's.

    Floyd is slowing down folks

    @Hatesrats

    I know Mayweather has declined in areas, and I've noticed he's fighting more flatfooted than I've ever seen him, but there were times in that Cotto fight that he appeared to simply be fighting Cotto's fight and giving the crowd a Mayweather that allowed himself to fight off the ropes more than usual, and mix it up more than we've seen from him in recent fights. I think it was the 3rd or 4th round when Mayweather repeatedly hit Cotto with right hooks, and then for some reason just abandoned that punch, when it looked like that might be the only punch he needed to beat Cotto. Their was another instance when in between rounds when Cotto had Mayweather leaking from his nose and while in his corner the camera zoomed in and the crowd went nuts. Mayweather calmly smiled at the camera as if to say "you want to see me bleed, well here it is".

    I don't think Floyd cares that much about entertainment or making up for past issues. All he cares about is winning in the easiest manner possible. If he could still box like he did against Corrales he would be doing it rather than going through those tough patches in the Cotto fight. He's more flat footed now because he's older. Luckily for him, his defence is very good even without much movement -- he can roll, slip and parry at close range. Still, he's not as sharp as he used to be and he's clearly past his prime. I don't see anyone good enough to take advantage of that and beat him, though.

    We all know Mayweather is incredibly sensitive, and he like all other top level athletes when faced with criticism, usually respond. I was very young at the time but I can remember when Ali was criticized as a guy who could throw a punch but couldn't take one, so he deliberately when out and took punishment, just to appease fans. Don't remember which fight it was but he obviously heard the criticism and fought in a manner he didn't have to.

    He's definitely sensitive about his style (which is why, after the Baldomir fight where Merchant implied that he was boring, Mayweather started crying at the post fight press conference) but he's not sensitive to the point of voluntarily taking punishment to answer his critics. Mayweather is very concerned with his health and minimizing all risks inside the ring. He thinks it's distasteful to take punishment and try to prove yourself in a war. He's not the type to lose his cool and do something risky like Leonard did against Duran. If he can win a fight easily he'll do it.

    wasn't alive at the time becuase Im only 15 but if I recall it was the fight with Oscar Bonavena. Ali was taking some good shots to the body on purpose.

    Floyd doesn't like to get hit, he's getting old. One or two fights left in him.
