I think he wanted to have a good crowd pleasing fight because he was going to jail afterwards. He knew he had cotto anyways. His legs aren't as good as they once were but hell he's in his mid 30s

Cotto had a lot to do with it. Mayweather doesn't exactly care to satisfy fans that don't understand his true fighting style, there are many other fans out there that understand and appreciate it and that's good enough. Cotto's fight style will always give Mayweather a decent fight/challenge, even if both were in their primes. That's the style that could trouble Mayweather though Cotto needed more activity and aggression, definitely easier said than done but if he applied more of those he could have troubled Mayweather more.

Naw....Floyd just needs to stay away from 154lbs and beyond. We have all seen Floyd fight several times (if not more). He looked tired after 7 rounds and had no sauce on his punches. In fact he has never looked good above 147lbs (actually 140lbs). But this is why everyone wants him to fight a true LMW or MW. So they can see Floyd at his worst and lose.

A little of both. I remember after clearly winning the first few rounds in the center of the ring, it looked like he just walked back to the ropes on his own will.
But at the same time, if you look at round 8 cotto did an awesome job keeping him there and didn't let him escape.

The truth is in the middle

In my opinion, I think Mayweather wanted to show his strength against Cotto and was surprised by Cotto's physical strength. So in a way, although it may have been Mayweather's idea to stand with Cotto (whether it be the centre or on the ropes) he was also dragged in to Cotto's fight in doing so (Cotto pushed Mayweather back in to the corner when Mayweather tried to get out at times), and we don't see that often.

May have also been the reason why Mayweather looked tired in there at times, again, something we never see often, if ever.

Floyd actually showed a sparring session to let fans know how he was gonna fight Cotto and beat him, the Cotto fight was nothing more than a glorified sparring session with Floyd stepping on the gas and letting off we he wanted like in the 12th to let Cotto know he was toying with him, when he could of brutally ko'ed him.

Floyd needed good rounds from Cotto, due to lack of rounds in the Ortiz fight, Mayweather could have easily boxed him, him was hitting Cotto with everything in the 1-4 rounds and buckled him a few times

And people is foolish with this leg being dead thing, what 147-154 pound fighter is bouncing on their legs running for 12 rounds, it's a waste of energy

He fought the same way vs Mosley and Ortiz but used his legs vs Marquez.

Floyd will move when it's beneficial to him. He's always been about conserving energy.

    Floyd doesnt brawl.
Now, there is outside fighting and there is inside fighting.
To be good at both requires SKILL.
Inside --- you block, parry, slip, bob/weaver and counter.
    Thats not brawling.
Also, there is the quality of Floyd's punches/counters.
He consistently uses near perfect technique.
Thats something that Cotto, Pacquiou do not do very consistently.
    And brawlers do at all.

To be realistic, Floyd moved much more against the smaller JMM than he did against Cotto, of course Floyd isn't as agile as he was when he was in his early twenties, but I do believe If he wanted to commit to be more mobile them he could...remember against Phillip Ndou who was a big puncher a younger fresher Mayweather stayed in the trenches with him and didn't use his legs much...this was the case even against Zab...

So Mayweather would just take punches just to "appeal to fans" when he alwasy states how important his health is? Why is it so hard to give Cotto props? His jab would've always bothered Floyd. Both don't belong in 154 so that excuse doesn't work out in this case either.

I' not sure why he did it, but I will say if age is the reason behind him going toe to toe, then I'm all for it, because god know there wasn't no one who could hang with him, when he was younger.
