Feels like the guy hasn’t fought in forever and he looked far from a world beater in his last fight from what I recall. Did he just get paid ridiculous money by Triller and give up or what?
Never made any official announcement that I heard. He's ranked 1 or 2 by the WBA. He even talked a few months ago about fighting for the bridges title, although it seems he has abandoned that.
The hype around Hunter had dropped off following his lacklustre performance against an aging Povetkin. Almost no one tuned in for his fight against Mike Wilson, not long after he failed to submit his VADA tests. He then had a very weird couple of months where he randomly called out Floyd Mayweather as a PED cheat... This content is protected With his signing to Triller, any attention to Hunter was well and truly gone. However, those that held on hope for his second coming in the division tuned in to his rematch with Jerry Forrest (after shamelessly ducking Hrgovic with a shot at the IBF mando). Jerry was on a bit of a resurgence and offered a solid task for the less than impressive 2021 version of Hunter. Hunter looked HORRIBLE, and I mean horrible. Zero snap, the gas tank of a chinchilla and even vomited in the corner. He had no response to Forrest fighting southpaw and was a walking punching bag. He arguably lost 3/4 of the fight and was hurt on a couple of different occasions. He was gassed after 4 rounds and hardly had the tank to make the full fight. The fight could have been stopped for a Medical TKO before coming out for the 6th round, as Hunter vomited in the corner. After losing the majority of the fight, he was gifted a draw. As @catchwtboxing mentioned, Hunter stated that he wanted to be the man to rule the Bridgerweight division...since then he's been awfully quiet.
You can catch the RBR from the Forrest 2 fight here: https://www.boxingforum24.com/threads/michael-hunter-ii-vs-gerard-forrest-ii-cassius-chaney-vs-george-arias-rbr.678417/page-18 CST80 is a big Hunter fan and even he had a draw at best for Hunter. Most had Forrest winning by 2 rounds in a 10-rounder. With Forrest finishing strong, Hunter was absolutely ****ed if it went a full 12.
Nothing wrong with him, he has signed with Boxxer and was scheduled to fight Hughie Fury, who pulled out due to illness. They will reschedule their bout shortly. Signing with Triller was a terrible career move. He is a talented heavyweight and hope he can find back his form from his fights with Bakole, Kuzmin & Povetkin.
I'd totally forgotten about that, in fact I'd forgotten about Hunter completely. As you say the Triller move was dumb. But hopefully he wins the WBA eliminator vs Hughie Fury and then gets a shot at Dubois, a fight I think he can win if he shows up in shape and shows the form that saw him beat Kuzmin, Bakole and Povetkin.
He is not even in his father's shadow, he does not care about the legacy, he only cares about money and easier fights...
He was being so ridiculously overrated. James Ali Bashir, who talks utter nonsense, said several times and adamantly that he would be the man of the heavyweight division.
I think Hunter is punch drunk, geniunely Hes been sounding off last couple of yeard, his speech is more slurred, takes him longer to articulate sentences
