Well let's see...he went from proclaiming he was as a good as Willie Pep, Sandy Saddler, etc, etc all rolled into one before the fight, to winning a pedestrian decision over the very ordinary Manuel Calvo afterward and then retiring right away. Yes, the man had flashy entrances and could punch like a mule, but his defense was always suspect and he knew the elite fighters were gonna eat him up after MAB took his lunch money in front of the entire boxing world. So in short...yes.
Naz didnt just fight shithouses and tomato cans, he beat Tom Johnson (ibf) cesar soto wbc champ, in unification bouts wilfredo vazquez who got stripped of his wba title for fighting hamed, manuel medina 2 x former champ and my personal favorite vs former 2 x champ kevin kelley which he won by 5th round KO but was dropped like 5 or 6 times before winning in Ring magaine's fight of the year Nevertheless, Barrera beat him good and proper and I believe the same would have happened if he fought morales or JMM Interstingly, JMM was no 1 contender for like 2 years and Hamed offered him a fight but JMM declined
Tom Johnson was very shopworn - he had to struggle to get by Ever Beleno (who subsequently never made any real noise) to set up the Hamed fight - Cesar Soto was solid but never that great to begin with - Wilfredo Vazquez was waaay past his prime when he fought Hamed - Medina was still useful, but also shopworn, and Hamed had trouble with him - and Kevin Kelley was still dangerous but also past his prime. Hamed was always matched carefully. Not saying he was complete B.S., but he wasn't as good as he was made out to be, and he knew it in his heart after MAB embarrased him.
Theres a documentary called 'little prince...the big fight' about his preparation for this fight I suggest watching it before commenting :good
Yeah, thank god the most exciting most charismatic man in the sport who always had exciting fights dissapeared.
I will say that I think it was a shame that he left the sport. I personally was not a fan of his and was glad to see him get beaten, but I will admit that having him around was good for the sport. He put people in the seats and made people pay attention to the little guys. It really is too bad he lost his desire to compete after experiencing his first defeat.
Exactly I love him, but I completely get why people hate the cocky little shite But fighters like him are just great entertainment, the style, the entrance, and the added factor so much of if you dont like him you are just desperate to see him get his ass handed to him and the grin wiped of his face. Its kind of similar to mayweather now, so many people will be glued to his fights just because they desperately want to see him lose.
