I have seen something about Steward wanting keep him away from him when he was training him. Steward said this when he was commentating on a fight on HBO.

Yeah he did. He had to fight one of the big 2 sooner or later so he tried his luck on Barrera. Marquez would have humiliated him just as bad, but he wasnt a big name like MAB or Morales

Shame for Marquez as this would have catapaulted his career

Disagree with you there. Just seen his fight with Norwood and although I think he was ripped off by the judges he was not ready for Naz at that point. In his prime I'd favour him over Hamed though.

Incorrect. The big 2 were very much Morales and Barrera. Marquez was considered a bit of a dark horse but largely unknown by most despite decent international class wins. He was beaten by Norwood in a good fight and pretty much consigned to the who needs him club.

He was the number one contender for Naz long held WBO title, the fight was made and about 2 weeks before Naz pulled out with flu. The match was never re-made, nor was it clamoured for. Marquez was a nobody at that time.

This is an urban myth from memory. Marquez was his mandatory, Hamed asked for an extension on the usual time-frame for making the fight as he wanted to go for a unification bout, Marquez got fed up with waiting so took a shot at WBA champ Freddie Norwood instead, lost and was therefore dropped in the WBO ratings.
