Did Norton get Quarry at the right time?

Norton definately got Quarrry at the right time and knew it. They had sparred earlier in Nortons career and Quarry had given him a beating. After that Norton would not fight him until Quarry was shot.

 

Didn't really get him at the right time. It's not really considered a particularly meaningful win for Norton, so it doesn't add anything to Norton's reputation.
Maybe a 50-50 fight if both were at their best. I'd probably favour Norton though.
Quarry gets stupidly over-rated.

 

Had this fight taken place in 1970, I see Quarry coming out on top.

 

If I remember correctly, Jerry had a seriously messed up back going into this fight but daddy insisted he go ahead with the aid of painkillers. And someone told Norton that Jerry didn't like men of color. Recipe for disaster.

 

Quarry was the 'fill-in" for the original fighter who pulled out of the Norton fight.

Quarry had about 3 weeks to train for this major fight.

Both Frazier and Ali had high respect for Quarry as a man.

 

Even though Jerry was over the hill and Ken was peaking,I feel that Norton would always have beaten Quarry. In order to have beaten a prime Norton,you needed to be a master boxer like Ali/Holmes or a thunderous puncher (Foreman) or a swarmer like Frazier.

 

That was the Ellis fight.

 

Quarry was shot and it was the perfect time (Admitted Drug and alcohol abuse) Quarry still rocked Ken badly but did not see it because the referee jumping in...Prime for Prime I like Jerry by a KO, not as fast as Cooney but you never know

 

I guess you could say the only better time to face Norton would have been around the time of the Zanon fight. I seem to recall Holmes possibly fighting Quarry then, based upon how he looked in the Zanon fight.

Cherry picking at its best though. And Norton himself was the victim of the same issue when he took on Cooney. Those old reflexes just don't like certain styles. There was also some more cherry picking with the version of Ron Stander Norton faced on the undercard of Ali-Young.

 

Yes, meaning that is why Norton won. Back up a few years and Quarry wins.

 

Quarry was not at his best but had they met "prime vs. prime" the end result would have still been a TKO/KO win for Norton.

Norton was better than Quarry in almost every way... bigger, taller, longer reach, heavier, stronger, harder puncher, faster, better footwork, better jab, better boxer, less prone to cuts.

They both had good stamina.

Quarry had the better chin. Quarry didn't have enough power to put Norton down though. Norton did have enough power to cut and hurt Quarry.

Norton gave Ali hell in 3 fights. He won a close decision over Ali in their first fight and lost two close decisions to Ali... most agree that he was robbed vs. Ali in their 3rd fight.

Norton gave Holmes hell but lost by SD.

Norton won a close decision over Young... who had been robbed vs. Ali and won decisions over Lyle and Foreman (he even dropped Foreman).

He also beat Henry Clark KO9, Boone Kirkman KO7, Ron Stander KO5, Larry Middleton KO10, Duane Bobick KO1, Lorenzo Zanon KO5, and Tex Cobb WSD10 (past prime vs. Cobb) among others. He drew with Scott LeDoux (5 months before the Cobb fight). He was past prime vs. Shavers and Cooney (LKOby1 in both). He understimated Jose L. Garcia early in his career and was stopped in 8 rounds. He stopped Garcia in 5 rounds in their rematch.

Sure, he was stopped in 2 by Foreman... so was Frazier.

Quarry won a decision over a pre-peaked Lyle and stopped Shavers who wasn't a hard guy to stop. He was crushed by Frazier x2, Ali x2, and Norton. He was also stopped by Chuvalo. Quarry won a close decision over Norton KO victim Middleton. He stopped Zanon in the 9th round losing the first 8 rounds. Norton stopped Zanon in 5.

Quarry is overrated

 

You're wrong and you know you are wrong. You know damn well Norton slices up Quarry's face and wins by stoppage even if Quarry was at his best.

 

this is a man not to be messed with here.

 

At their best, it would be good fight. When they fought, Quarry was already finished.
