Just watched the fight and wondered if there was a possibility Ortiz thought it would go to the cards if the doctor stopped it due to the cut. It's a long time since I've seen a fighter just walk away from a fight like that knowing it's going to cost him.
Personally, I think this fight really shocked him. Judging by the way he reacted to pressure in the ring and then afterwards outised of the ring it's like the reality of boxing at an elite level all of a sudden hit him (no pun intended). I hope he thinks things through and makes the right decision, whatever that may be, for himself. Maybe the occasion just got to him. As I said earlier though, he can dish it out but when it was put on him he pulled out of the fight. I'd love to hear what the GBP staff said to him backstage.
I thought it sounded like he was getting ready to get out of the game altogether from his post-fight comments, which to his credit seemed vey honest. It was obvious when he was sat on the stool, completely unresponsive to his trainer, even when he was threatening to pull him out, that he was done. The trainer shouldnt even have let him go out for the final round, and should have put the towel in before the ref stopped it. Looked to me like Ortiz knew he had nothing left when he was on the stool but just didnt want to admit it and was hoping the corner would step in. The general forum is full of dickheads insulting him for "quitting" but if he knows himself that he has no energy left whatsoever, only a complete ****ing idiot would stand there and take potentially lethal flush power shots. From here on in though, every fighter is going to fancy their chances against him after seeing him buckle from not the heaviest punishment from Maidana. Big questions over his stamina and chin now. Guess thats the end of the "Ortiz will kill Khan" general forum mantra. If you're talking heart and desire, Khan took a massive shot from Prescott, was in no shape to continue, but got up and had another go before taking another brutal knockdown, then got to his feet again to try and fight on.
IT was a really strange ending he could have beat Maidina (the right hook was there all the time) who looked powerful but basic but he just seemed to quit. Soon as he quit he was all smiles he didnt seem to upset at all that was untill shane mosley started telling him he didnt keep his left hand up when he punched. The hype train has certainly been derailed
This is what I'm talking about. Obviously he quit, I just wonder if he quit thinking it would go to the cards and he would win. It would explain a lot IMO.
I don't think so. Like I said, I think he had a massive reality check last night. He didn't seem shocked at the ref waving it off at all- Ortiz knew what was going down. If he was hoping for points he would have protested after seeing the ref wave it off straight away but he didn't. The simple fact is that Ortiz had enough.
Gary Young, Scottish pro boxer, was ringside and tells me he heard Ortiz asking his corner to pull him out during the interval. I watched the bout on line and it seemed to me that Ortiz ignored questions asking him if he wanted to quit both by his corner at the interval and by the ref after his last knockdown. Gary is sure of what he heard ,though, and I trust his story
He didn't look like he was a happy bunny, did he. When Ortiz's corner were threatening to pull him out I just put that down to them trying to motivate him but, like you say, he just didn't respond. I feel for the guy- a lot must have went through his head last night and he was incredibly honest in the post fight interview, for some, too honest.
He quit because he had gone... he was facing a beating until he was ko'ed or the ref stepped in He decided to save himself the punishment, which is sensible - but not compatible with being a top fighter
either ortiz is overrated or maidana is underrated and i think it is a little bit of both, i was shocked when ortiz quit......and you can tell on mosley's face and oscar's when they came in the ring....oscar looked pissed...... ortiz KNEW he had knocked down and hurt maidana numerous times, and then after facing big adversity in 6th he says? NO......that tells me something about ortiz..... but i became a huge fan of maidana....no questions about his heart....
I think ortiz started to believe the hype himself...being fed to him by golden boy. Remember alll that controversy with him giving Hoya fits in training. He really needs to work on his defence if he gets back into boxing. He was so open to the counter right. I dont think Maidana was a great boxer he just wanted it more. Seems like Ortiz thought this fight would be a walkover and didnt prepare mentally for it. While Maidana was willing to die thrice out there! There's nothing wrong with quitting as alot of people can call him what they want but guarantee if they took just one of those shots they'd run crying to there mama's. I doubt he'll box again or if anyone will pick him up unless he can prove his heart is completly in it
Yep Maidana is decent, got a good punch and can take a bit of stick too Obviously not the best techincally but he'd be a handful for anyone at 140 Ortiz was VERY disappointing, that bubble is well and truly burst
