Cotto didnt deserve the beating he got from rd's 10-12, He wasnt fighting valiantly then, he was really just running away. That was a smart stoppage, clearly you dont know what a few seconds in the ring could do to you.

I know exactly what a few seconds in the ring can do to you. If Cotto was really hurt that bad and wanted to quit, he could have taken a knee and stayed down. He's done it before. I just don't think Pacquiao legitly knocked Cotto out. He defeated him absolutely, but it should have been a decision victory not a knockout.

But like I said that's just my opinion.

    Dude - two words
    Leavander Johnson

He was not the first and it wont be the last. Boxers have walked away from a fight to later be put in hospital, go in to coma and die.

This might be news to people but often sustained beating is as dangerous as a solid KO (which is basically a small concussion).

If the ref calls a halt to a fight, to save one fighter from further punishment then it has to be said that the fighter that caused the referee to intervene undoubtedly deserves the tko!!

I have watched the fight. And, as much as I like Cotto, like many on here I felt the fight could have been stopped in the 9th. The fact that the referee did not, and chose to stop it in the 12th is the ref's call and whilst I would have liked to have seen Cotto go the distance I was not too disappointed with the ref's (Who is the expert and the one closest to the action) intervention.

A fighter's health is the paramount concern of any half decent referee and I believe that Bayliss had quite simply seen enough to force his intervention, irrespective of round.

A week or so ago was the 15th anniversary of the Nigel Benn-vs-Gerald McCellan fight. And the tragic events following that epic battle should ensure that we never really question a referee's intervention.

You really don't think Cotto would not have been seriously hurt (like he wasn't already) if Bayless let Pacquiao continue those barrage of punches?

Look at the fight again. Cotto was barely hanging in there in the last few rounds. Pac was actually showing a little mercy waiting for the ref to call it off. It was evident that cotto was merely hanging on for the bell to just sound, hence we was running away. Pac made that chest pump gesture to say "come on" because he probably thought why they were still doing this if nothing is hapenning.

    Yes and no.

Yes - The fight should have been stopped by his corner 2 rounds sooner.

No - If the ref let him take that much of an ass kicking he might as well have given him the honor of finishing on his feet.

I voted "unnecessary" as he should have just been let to finish. Fight should have been stopped by his own corner sooner after the 9th round imo. But since they let him continue and already in the last round, he might as well should have finished. I do not think he was in any more danger. He was protecting himself and running away from danger most the the last three rounds anyway. But have no problem with the stoppage either as he certainly had no chance of winning at all.

thats the whole point, which you seem to miss. with him ruinning like hell, it allowed him to get to the 12 rd. had he been beaten on worse like when he fought margarito it would have been stopped way sooner. it was ok to stop it, but cotto could have made it to the final bell the same way he made it to the 12th. because he was about to go before that, yet by retreating, pac couldn't finish him off.

thats the whole point, if you allow the man to take all that before, you might as well allow him to finish since pac did not land a devsating combo to finish him.

That's why there's a ref. Sometimes someone needs to save you from yourself. there's a difference between being brave and being too proud.

well like you, just an opinion.

Yep. To me it looks like they left that in Pac's hands and he was easing off the gas pedal. When they thought, "Oh crap, he might make it!" the ref stepped in.

I can't knock the stoppage, but it came too late not to let him finish.
