The only way to know for sure would be to get hit by both of them. Something I wouldn’t want to try. But if I had to guess I think Rocky Marciano was more revered as a power puncher than was Patterson
Closer in terms of raw power, yes, but Liston was a different beast entirely categorically. Both boxers' punches were more on the solid/thumping variety and less so explosive or sharp/jolting. But in terms of delivery and the effects their blows actually had on the opponent, it could be sub divided even further. Marciano was a unique sort of volume slugger. He had some one hitter quitter knockouts (walcott 2) and a few early blowouts. But he also had several fights where he needed to grind away tirelessly to settle for a late round stoppage (cokkel, Lastarza) or he needed to unload everything but the kitchen sink and several knockdowns to eventually keep the guy down (Shkor, Moore,). This was partly due to his smaller stature, shorter arms, and come forward aggressive style where he could get pretty wild at times. He also wasn't the most accurate finisher. Liston not only had a bit more raw destructive power, he had a more proper traditional boxing stance with better fundamentals and absurdly long arms. This was crucial in allowing him to actually set up his knockouts. His long battering ram jab helped too. He had a better delivery system, natural talent, and brute strength meant more devastating power on paper and in practice. Liston also didn't need to stick to His opponents like glue or throw as many combinations.
Highly doubt Lastarza gets stopped by Patterson. Lastarza had an excellent chin and was a solid defensive fighter.
Not saying the Patterson Moore fight was fixed but it damn looks fishy. Especially being Moore was the favorite and that looks like a flop of a KO so much so his manager thought he took a dive. No proof of it but had those two met prime for prime I’d wager my house on a Moore Ko win. back to topic. No one of that era would say Patterson hit harder. No mutual opponents. No one. Floyd had that manny Pac KO power. Fast hands at different angles u don’t see coming. Different then the clubbing force of a Marciano punch.
Patterson-Marciano is one of those all time heavyweight fantasy match ups I'd love to see. Patterson the faster hitter and Marciano the better slugger.
Perhaps the record suggests this is because Roland ducked the entire division. Rudy... I mean, Rocky, was a good little attrition puncher. Floyd was an explosive sharpshooter but ran into the the first ebb of the new wave heavyweight and learned he couldn't sell out on leaping hooks against modern athletes.
Patterson had power, but the speed of Hermes to pair so he connected flush which resulted in easier KO’s. Who knows if he hit harder honestly...
