Wasn't convinced by either tbh - feel Dodson or Magee with the right preparation would take the title off Smith
Wasn't a great fight to watch. I had Quigley winning by a couple, but both looked distinctly average.
Tony Dodson has called out Paul Smith on our forum. have a look http://www.merseygloves.com/ and go on the forum
Glad it's not just me, that was a ropey fight to say the least. It threatened to spark every now and again but just didn't. The press conference face offs were better watching. I cleared of to the Joiners mid way through, a pub of highly dubious character and clientele, which says it all about the fight tbh.
I had it 5-5 going into the last round. Gave it to Smith by a point. Quigley isn't agreat boxer and has had 15 fights. He gave Smith enough trouble to nick that fight and even though I gave it to Smith by a round there was plenty of rounds which could have gone to Quigley which I gave to Smith. For me he pulled the win out of the last 2 rounds when Quigley looked ****ed. Smith has found his level and for me will not be there for too much longer (By the way winner of a British Title should in no way be laughed at, its and amazing thing to have achieved especially if he gets to keep it but for all the talk of him being world class then the performances of late have been laughable)
I will say it once again........... if throwing a jab, and getting hit, then pushing your man to the ropes, and then ducking down and going in with the head is something that wins you fights, then quigley won, in the real world, smith won, cleaner work, telling shots, but needs to improve to survive at euro/world level. He has good whiskers, has a dig of his own, and has boxing ability. But wbo doing no favours right now giving him number 4 rating
He struggled against an awkward fighter in Quigley, but if hes the slick fighter he supposed to be he should of dealt with him better, though I thought Smith just edged it, his comments after about getting motivated for a fight etc only rings true if you are world champion and its time to fight bum of the month,if you are an up and coming British prospect you should be hungry to win everything to reach the top
smith looked in great shape, which he proved in the closing rounds. smigga didnt look like a world beater to be honest. he needs to set up his shots more and fire out more jabs. nevertheless, he got the win. he was the better boxer and quigley was more active boxer. judges ruled in favour of frank warren!!!
i guess your one of the guys who think quigley bullied him and backed him up, yes? I think you need to go back and watch the fight a few times over before you say smigga is overrated and he was crap. he has great quality and he done some fantastic things in the ring against quigley. watch some of the counter shots he gets off in rounds 2 and 5. the rounds that smith won, he won clearly. the rounds that quigley won, they were messy and could have went either way. it was just a really hard fight to score, but watch again and youll see smith has all the quality! having said that, if paul doesnt dominate him in the rematch, hes staying at domestic level i think... and tony dodson will probably get his fight!!!
Think i saw the fight same as you buddy. Paul clear winner, good enough for euro, maybe world but needs more time if he is gonna get there. being ranked by wbo number 4 isnt right, right now, maybe in a year once he has retained british f3 times, or something like that.
