I'm not saying we can change the result, I'm saying the result shouldn't have stood.

By the rules under which it was contested, it absolutely should have stood.

You’re saying you think they should have changed the result because you don’t like the result. That’s not how it works.

The outcome was just because those were the rules.

Bobby Chacon got a technical draw vs Rafael Limon in one of their fights. He was ahead on all cards and having the better of it. Then they clashed heads, Limon was cut and they stopped it. The ref ruled that Bobby caused the head clash even though it was accidental so it was a draw since he was ahead — it would have been a technical decision for Limon had he been ahead because he was the one who was cut.

Today that would have been a technical decision in favor of Chacon, but those weren’t the rules at the time.

You’re basically saying ‘well I saw a replay decades later and the ref who didn’t see the low blow after the bell should have ruled it a low blow even though he couldn’t see it and even though he didn’t rule it intentional, so the result should not have stood.’

To say ‘tough break for Buchanan’ is fair. To say it should not have stood is wrong because that’s not how it worked.

Also, you’re basically wanting Ken to benefit from rulebreaking — he was the one who threw after the bell, causing Duran to throw back, so if he was hurt by the retaliation he should keep his belt. That wouldn’t sit right with me. Why would it sit right with you?

It’s as easy to argue that Ken should have been DQ’d.

He got beat pillar to post. WAY behind. He doesn’t get a bailout because he got hit back after the bell when he was the one who broke the rules leading to the decisive punch.

As I noted, Ken was offered a rematch in Panama and turned it down.

    No i disagree.

I don't think they should have changed the result, I said i don't think the result should have stood.

    They aren't the rules.

The rules at the time didn't permit illegal punches to end the fight.

That's not what I'm basically saying.

    It is how it works.

I'm not wanting anyone to benefit from rule breaking.

A fighter doesn't get disqualified for punching after the bell.

He also shouldn't lose a fight by ko from an illegal punch.

The illegal punch was a retaliation for an illegal punch.

The ref didn’t rule it was illegal because he couldn’t see it. Why? Because Duran was punching back after the bell between rounds after Ken Buchanan hit him three times after the bell, and refs generally don’t stay in position between rounds.

Ken brought this result upon himself.

And explain to me how the result should not stand … but you say you’re also not saying it should be changed. It’s like telling someone to run and be still.

Doesn't make any difference if it was a retaliation or not, the punch that ended the fight was a low blow.

The ref should do better, it's his job to referee the fight.

If the referee felt he had to put hands on Duran to stop him throwing more punches, because the bell has rang, he knows that whatever punches land are not legal. So when Buchanan can't continue the referee should do whatever is in his power to resume the fight legally, failing that he shouldn't be awarding a tko victory since you aren't allowed to technically knock someone out with an illegal punch.

You can win on a low blow TKO, even if the ref acknowledges that it was a low blow in real time. Lloyd Honeyghan vs. Yung-kil Chung is in the record books as a TKO win for Honeyghan, and that fight ended when Chung couldn't continue after a low blow, even after he'd been given five minutes to recover.

Ah, the old saying: Pull a tiger’s tail and you better have a plan for the teeth.

Ken was doing what Gomer Pyle referred to as ‘messing with things best left alone.’

And Ken isn’t allowed to hit Duran after the bell.

You basically want to let him benefit from initiating an exchange by breaking the rules.

The referee’s job is to officiate the fight, but he isn’t expected to be in position to see punches after a round ends. Because Ken wasn’t supposed to throw punches after the round ends.

It went down how it went down. The title rightfully changed hands.

Let me ask you this: If Duran had, instead of punching back, fallen on his face (from the exact punches as Buchanan threw them after the bell) and not continued, would you award Ken the fight be TKO?

Alternately, are you OK with the result if the ref had instead DQ’ed Buchanan for illegal punches?
