Did Roc Nation Make A Mistake?

Yep, gave him a reported $50-55 million 3 fight deal in March and since then Cotto beat Geale on regular HBO and then lost to Canelo in a successful PPV. Fact is Roc Nation are likely to lose money on all their boxers. Cotto is near the end of his career, has one fight left on his deal with Roc Nation and I can't see them making all their money back with just one more fight.

While Ward as a signing for Roc Nation has been less than successful they are only paying him $2 million per fight and not $15 million plus like they are with Cotto. The Cotto signing is likely to lose them more money, apparently Cotto was paid $15 million for Geale a fight that must have lost Roc Nation millions. I'd say Cotto at the moment was a bigger mistake.

 

Since Barrera has basically no exposure yet I'm guessing he wants the Ward fight but 100k would be fair considering what Ward gets. I don't know what the offer was.

Cotto seems to be using that deal as a cash-out on his career. I expect him to fight another Geale-type oppenent at a 156 or 157 catchweight, in the final installment in his 3-fight deal.

 

I think he was offered 300K, which isn't that bad really when you consider Fonfara got 400K when he fought Stevenson and so he wouldn't make much more if he got a title shot.

Yq I think its funny that some people think his a great business man. The only thing his had success selling is his music to a did enfranchisd community.

ROC nation boxing have made some terrible decisions and its almost like the people running it don't understand the boxing game at all

kinda sad when people are ripping ward...because if you flipped resumes with him and ggg....and it was ward that said anyone from 154-168 ...then dodged the fight at 168 when ggg came calling....ward would be crucified..........the actual scenario is opposite and nobody gives ggg any grief for it....its sad.....as are most of gggs fans.....his resume and career are still a joke at this point(ggg that is)

 

roc nation isnt doing too bad when it comes to athletes across the major sports......they might take an L in boxing early....but when yer just starting that branch you need credible names....real fighters on your roster to draw more.....the old cliche "takes money to make money" is operative here

 

Point taken, so now the next question is "Why is Andre Ward trying to fight guys like Barrera that no one knows?".

Ward should be negotiating with Adonis Stevenson, Sergey Kovalev, and (if he can make the weight) James DeGale.

The last thing Ward needs is a tune-up. We all know he stays in shape all year, and he's getting old.

 

Knowing that Ward would make at least 2 million, an undefeated contender like Barrera should expect at least 400-500k, and I doubt he was offered anything close to that.

 

Are you serious ??? Stevens got 450k to fight GGG 2 years ago, and undefeated Barreara is worth only 100k when Ward makes 2+ mil ???

 

Ward is his own worst enemy.

 

From Cotto to Ward to Rigondeaux, I doubt that they have one unsatisfied fighter. They're as much of a mistake as Al Haymon is with PBC.
