Combat - there have many times on this board where you have seemed to have difficulty controlling yours!

Anyway...I have no wish to continue arguing with you...Merry Christmas!

Wasn't Marciano present at some of Joe's fights? I'm sure they met a few times.

I know Frazier thought really, really highly of Marciano. Considered him better than himself and Ali both though I don't know if he said he was better than Louis though I doubt he went that far.
You probably already knew that, I just think it's a cool trivia type thing and it shows how much a lot of professionals respect the Rock.

Just read the thread and saw Bummy Davis already posted pretty much this same thing, pretty cool he considered Rocky number 2. I rank him third.

    QUOTES

    By Rocky

"In the ring, I never really knew fear."

"I believe, in my prime, I could have fought with anybody alive."

"What would be better than walking down any street in any city and knowing you're a champion?"

Joe Louis is the greatest heavyweight champion of all time. Rocky Marciano is second only to Louis. Where do I rate Ali? Somewhere below me. I beat him, and if I could beat him, no doubt Joe Louis and Rocky Marciano could have beaten him."

Having seen Ali/Frazier FOTC MSG,1971,I conclude that the very best Clay/Ali loses to the very best Frazier,HtH.
When was Ali at his best ? Before his ban in 1967,when he fought Jones, Cooper, Mildenberger,Terrell, or the bigger ,stronger Ali after his return in 1970 ? Either Ali, I believe that Frazier, because of his style beats any version of Ali. STYLES. Ali had a greater career as a boxer than the
short primed Frazier, who peaked in 1970 against Jimmy Ellis and Bob Foster. In any event I was damn lucky to watch that great event in MSG sitting in the end balcony with a pair of binoculars. Idiot I was, I never saved my ticket stub to that event,March 8, 1971....
P.S. Ali was not that "rusty" for that fight with Frazier. He had been boxing exhibitions while banned and a few months before that fight,Ali kod Quarry and Oscar Bonavena.

The very first fight I ever watched was Ali-Liston, and I also watched the FOTC.

Ali was still great after his return to the Ring.

But he had nowhere near the speed or reflexes of the 65/66/67 version.

We can never know for certain, but I would pick the prime Ali over Joe (or anyone else who has ever boxed). Just too fast and too hard to hit cleanly.

The Joe Louis of Max Baer vintage, hit with trip-hammer speed and power, and would catch up and destroy Ali/Clay,SOONER or LATER. Ali Never faced a man who hit with such great leverage and combinations. Eddie Futch thought so, Ray Arcel thought so, because there has never been or most likely ever be, a hitter like the YOUNG Joe Louis...TIMBER...

Your facts are wrong. Ali was not rusty. He had already fought two fights, the second of which went into the last round.

You forgot to point out that Frazier completely schooled Ali. If he pitched a near shut-out against a 29-year-old Ali, then maybe he would have slightly outpointed the 21-year-old version.

You Ali fans always talk about Ali's 3-year lay-off as if it were Frazier's fault. It was Ali's choice to stay inactive. He could have trained and fought behind closed doors.

Most would consider stopping reading at this point.

And this would clinch the deal.

    Baseball, my man.

You should join a baseball forum.

    You'll do better there, (maybe).

Diligent training isn't really a substitute for competition though, as anybody who bets on such things as horse races understands. SRL was somehow able to replicate authentic competitive conditions in closed door training for Hagler (actually having full blown fights rather than sparring), but this is something very rarely successfully synthesized by other historical fighters.

Chuvalo has been extremely vocal in his assertions that Ali was a vastly diminished athlete in 1972 from what Muhammad had been when George first took him on in 1966. Patterson corroborated Chuvalo's accounts of Ali's reduced athleticism. Both Floyd and George rematched Muhammad when he was more competition sharpened than he was in March 1971. My inclination would be to defer to Chuvalo over who might have won between peak Ali and FOTC Frazier. (I wouldn't be surprised though if Chuvalo would diplomatically keep his true opinion on this to himself in the interest of maintaining good relations with both. He and Frazier seem pretty chummy whenever they get together to reminisce, and it's actually kind of fun to watch them chat about old times.)
