Just re-watched a part of Hagler v Roldan to compare his speed to Nunn and Toney when fought each other and Ray Leonard who was commentating on the fight said Roldan was the heavier puncher, his strength was giving Marvin problems but was he overall a harder puncher than Hagler?
I would not take Leonard as a fair minded person on Hagler as he was trying to get under his skin ( And did ) Roldan was a puncher, however his KO record is inflated. Almost all of his KO's happened in South American or Central American. I would say Hagler hit harder, with Roldan being among the best puncher's Hagler fought.
Hagler wouldn`t have heard Leonard`s commentary at ringside while in the middle of that fight though.
I was about to write this. So great point! I'll add along with his awkwardness, he was very physical and dirty too. Elbow follows a hook, pushing, headbutt all of it was in his arsenal.
Roldan had Hearns in bad trouble and Marvin threw tons of shots at Hearns in the war, Tommy`s legs were already shaky before Hagler landed the big one.
I think they were comparable, although the way Roldan swung with abandonment makes me think he hit a little harder just on his style. He was all or nothing, and he hurt Hearns more with one or two punches than Hagler did, although he didn't hit him as much. Hearns always said Roldan was the hardest puncher he ever faced. And I think Nunn did also.
Roldan was a clubbing puncher, he had bad intentions with most of them put a lot into them. Hagler’s were thrown with seemingly less effort and better technique.
Be that as it may he could still give a better testimony than a ringside observer..... He DID after all get hit by both
I think Roldan was a harder one shot hitter than Hagler and was unfortunate to come up against Hagler, Hearns and Nunn in his title shots. A pity JR never got to share a ring with the likes of Antuofermo, Hamsho, Minter, Sibson, Mugabi, Briscoe etc etc
