Juan Roldan, according to Amilcar Brusa, was a sparring partner for Carlos Monzon. Roldan was one of many who said that Carlos hit too hard in sparring.
Of course Hagler would have heard the commentary as he was wearing an earpiece for this specific reason. I give up........
Mark, what they’re trying to say is ... do you think it’s possible Marvin might have looked at the video after and not muted the sound? Ray wasn’t trying to get inside Marvin’s head WHILE he was in the ring, but for the future. Ray was three moves ahead at all times.
Well Roldan did something Marvin Hagler never did: he knocked down Marvin Hagler. I’m not sure he hit harder — probably more force and thudding power than MMH but nowhere near as sharp or precise, more of a caveman clubbing vs. a sniper. But I think he was stronger than Marvin. Hell, he was almost certainly stronger than anyone he fought.
It would be interesting to get a timeline on this one if it happened even assuming it was say, for Monzon's last fight. Monzon's last fight was in mid 77 and Roldan didn't even turn pro until the end of 78 some 1 1/2 years later. He would have been 19 when Monzon fought last. I'd imagine he did indeed hit to hard for a young amateur.
He didn't knock down Hagler friend, he pulled him down after missing a hook, but it does demonstrate his awkwardness and pure strength with that one missed shot.
Another attempt to build on the "legendary punching" power of Monzon. Yet during the majority of his career, most of his ko's came after the 5th -6rds during his championship run. He was a heavy handed, but not a dynamic puncher.
Yes i'd agree he was heavy handed for sure without being near top level. His timing, output and stamina were the thing more so than big raw power. More of a heavy accumulation puncher.
