Did Roy Jones Jr out-box Bernard Hopkins in 2010?

Yeah I was like "WTF is this" start the count! And all that stuff gave Roy more confidence. And you know the point deduction against Jones was borderline as well. Hopkins bullrushed Roy and then tried to clinch Jones and was actually holding on to Roy Jones's hand. Roy threw a punch that hit him on the side of the head. That wasn't nearly as blatant of a foul than when Hopkins hit Roy on the break later in the fight. (or the headbutt in the 11th)

And I remember thinking after the fight how much more entertaining it was than their first fight. But most fans didn't seem to appreciate how good of a fight it was. I think whether or not Roy outboxed him depends on your definition of what outboxing is. Roy was definitely outboxing Hopkins though. Whether or not he did enough to win the decision is debatable. That point deduction and not getting credit for the knockdowns made the scoring more wide in favor of Hopkins. And the 5th round I thought Roy won that round with the uppers off the ropes, and Hopkins didn't get penalized or even warned for the low blows.

The build up was great but the fight was one of the worst ive seen in my life.

The winner prime for prime is already written.

What surprised me about that fight was how effective jones was on the inside against the supposed master of infighting Hopkins. I just kept thinking how a prime jones with the reflexes would have been able to pull the trigger and capitalize so much more effectively in the center of the ring.

Well in an ironic twist of fate Roy didn't get paid period for the rematch there was no money left over and Hopkins didn't even get his guarantee either the fight was a financial disaster.

Why was it a financial disaster? Was it really a financial disaster? I bought the PPV. It was entertaining. Tarver and Roberto Duran were at the fight. I don't think it was a sell out, but the crowd was definetly into the fight when it was going on. There was a weird feeling after the fight because no one was really sure what they saw. They remembered Hopkins going down multiple times but no one seems to question the decision. Whereas nowadays pretty much every fight gets discussed from all angles. This fight never got the fan dissection of what happened like lets say Malignaggi Broner. But this would be like Ali fighting Ken Norton in the 1980s. Roy didn't look done in this fight. For the people who say that Roy was done after 2003, I'd say I thought he looked better in 2010 vs Hopkins than he did against Johnson or in Tarver 3. Tarver then went on to beat Danny Green and there was even talk of RJJ Tarver 4.

I'll be the first to admit that RJJ has not perform as good since this fight. He moved up in weight and did more HBO commentary. Hopkins said he was going to move up to Heavyweight but that never happened.

Roy didn't get paid period? I thought it was 50-50 unless there was a knockout.

That rematch was much closer than what the cards indicated. And that was a shock.

Yeah I agree. Would you say that was the best performance / version of RJJ since 2003?

Nah. He was 100 times better against Tarver III, Ajamu and Hanshaw.

Not Tarver III. Rounds 4 and 5 he was good, but besides that he was very cautious, more cautious than in Hopkins II.

Ajamu he was very good in after the rough 1st round, but Ajamu sorta ran outta gas. Hanshaw he was very good too. Lacy as well.

They never should have fought again, their first fight was terrible.

It was the HBO promotion that made newer fans want that fight and of course they messed that up too.
FINALLY 17 years later they had the rematch with Jones the clear has been.

And that rematch was the most stinkest fight of all time from both guys,

at least their first fight was an undercard fight on a Riddick Bowe card.

The mere fact their rematch was PPV for 50 bucks- THAT was shameful

The PPV numbers sucked bad... And I think there was a guaranteed amount for B.Hop, not leaving Roy with much.

And Roy actually looked much better against Johnson and Tarver than this fight... Rounds 3-5 he really put it on Johnson, and came pretty close to detouring Johnson's fight plan in my opinion, but just not quite enough..

Also, he had Tarver hurt a couple times in the mid rounds, that I thought if he just went after him, he could have stopped him... But he was still just a little too gun-shy.

Jones was shot by the time he rematched Hopkins.

The one thing I got out of the fight though was the certainty that Hopkins could never outbox a non-shot Roy Jones, much less a prime one.

If you look at Hopkins wins vs Trinidad, Tarver, and Pavlik, he outboxed those fighters center ring with ease.
Even a shot Jones was too quick and fast for Hopkins to get off first off against.
Throughout the whole rematch, Hopkins attack was to lower his head and take Jones to the ropes with activity where he would then stall the action by getting into a clinch.
Hopkins never outboxed Jones, he only outhustled and outworked him with roughhouse activity.
