In my opinion he should have stayed at Heavyweight or retired. Coming back down in weight fails 99% of the time.
Ive always read Roy was a gym rat. You would think even now at 41 he considering he fought 4 times in a 1 year period recently. Im sure he doesnt train now with the same energy and intensity he did in his prime but to be in the shape he is at his age is damn impressive. Losing fights ? Yes but still an impressive athelte at his age id kill for his current handspeed.
Got this from another site. After several rounds of warming up (and press ups) he did 12 rounds of boxing (pads/sparring/bags). Roy did 4 minute rounds all the time and then did 16 minutes each on speedball and floor-to-ceiling ball. This was followed by 1200 reps on the abs (he had gradually increased total ammount of reps on the abs over time) and 16 minutes of skipping before a stretch. He also ran 5 miles in the morning followed by squats. He played basketball after lunch. It took up 6-7 hours of his day. It is assumed that he always used that routine since splitting with his father. Roy ate fruit for breakfast, chicken salad for lunch with some vegetables and pasta. He had a protein dinner which was usually some more chicken. He had never in his life had any alcohol or drug in him at all. When his father trained him he was also banned from womanising and even masturbation! Apparently the only time he ever used weights to train his upper body was for the Ruiz fight, and that was the only time he ever worked with Don King too. He had promised himself never to use weights to train his upper body and also had promised himself never to work with Don King, but the Ruiz fight was a one-off and he considered it career-defining at the time.
You say cops and sanitation workers, that is plural and not singular, can you name the cops or sanitation workers?
I saw an interview talking about his decision to cut back on junk food in his late 20's and how he was only just starting to take dieting seriously. I thought it was pretty astounding but then again he was a great natural athlete so maybe he got away with a crappy diet. I'm sure he trained like a dog too.
His father also put him on that back of a bull at a young age and tossed him in the Gulf of Mexico to teach him how to swim.
This myth that RJJ didn't know how to box is really becoming way too prevalent. Ask any boxer and they'll tell you that RJJ had mad technical skills to go with his talent and athleticism. It's not just a style thing that did him in, it's age. It happens to all fighters, no matter how orthodox they are (or aren't).
I dont think he train hard in last 5 years or so when someone who's been called a superman can only threw 9 punches in a round then ...
Come on now. You are putting a bit of a stretch on it. We all know he could box. This is like comparing super models. "She's not hot." Right. Look at when he is knocked out or stunned. It is while doing things that ANY top level trainer would be bursting a blood vessel while watching his fighter do. (Dirrell pulls some of that crap too.) RJJ just did things that ANY trainer would pull his hair out if a fighter did them. RJJ could just get away with it. Nobody is doubting his ATG status.
