You heard? Gotta take all those old timer stories with a grain of salt. I grew up drinking the Kool aid and believing all the narratives too, then YouTube came out and I could actually see for myself so many of the fights I had grown up hearing about.... And so many of them were completely different than they had been portrayed by the bert sugars and nat fleishers of the world, who can find an agenda almost anywhere to push.. As for Hamas, I had heard that he had gambling and morphine addictions, completely unrelated to the Schmelling fight, and that he was also involved in a mixed race relationship, something quite frowned upon at the time, and I suspect these factors contributed to his keeping a low profile and relevant irrelevance following the Schmelling bout
Schmeling pretty much ended his career in their second fight, he was paralyzed on the left side of his face for three years
I will try to tidy them up, but he went into the fight at the top of the division, and it seems that it did indeed leave him with some sort of paralysis as a result of the fight. Now if there had been much left of him after that fight, don't you think that somebody would have tried to rebuild him as a contender? Even if it was just to get a good pay day.
