Did Shane Mosley deserve the 'Sugar' label?

To be technical, in terms of boxing greatness ... Ray Leonard couldn't carry Sugar Ray Robinson's jockstrap anyway, so no need to worry about Mosley being called 'Sugar' ...

Ray Leonard 'deserved' the 'Sugar' tag because he was actually named Ray, he was a great fighter, and it's a nice promotional nickname for a good-looking flashy black American fighter. It's a homage to the REAL and original Sugar Ray.

He didn't get that name by being 'as great as' the original.

 

Since when does a guy need permission to call himself "Sugar?" And from whom?

I swear, boxing fans are so weird sometimes. They act as if this is some exalted, kingly thing bestowed from on high. It's just a nickname.

 

It's just a nickname. I think Ray Olivera used Sugar as well.

I just think of him as Shane Mosley.

No, Shane does NOT deserve the nickname....well, maybe during his lightweight days.

 

Ah..at least Ray Leonard was in the same ballpark as the original. Shane Mosley was a good fighter and a class guy but he`s not in the same ballpark or the same state as those other two.

I dont really care that he used it the nickname. If it helped him promote himself and make more $$ then thats fine . It just never really fit his fighting style or his personality IMO.

I guess you're right. But still. It takes a very brave fighter to call himself 'Sugar', because of the standard that has been attached to the nickname.

Many still don't think of Ray Leonard as 'Sugar Ray'...and that's saying something.
