Don't get me wrong, he has had a tremendous career. . . but most of the fights i have seen of his involve him standing toe to toe with his opponents. Not since De la Hoya 1 did he use his legs effectively, not really dancing or boxing much at all but rather relying on his hand speed and moderate power. If he had perhaps concentrated on boxing a bit more, like for instance Floyd as he moved up in weight, do you think he wouldn't be as worn as he is today? and he could have possibly beaten Winky in their second fight? Loads of people are going to think this is pointless, but i don't think he used his ability enough, but rather focused on giving the fans an exciting match up
I don't think that he really has the talent that people think that he does in terms of boxing. he is a fighter, that is what he is good at If he had tried to be something that he isn't he probably would not have had the success that he did. Since he is so fast people think that he could have been a slickster but I am not so sure.
Agreed. If he tried to fight any other way he'd likely be ineffective. Mosley was trained to be a tough, hard, fighter. He was not trained to box and move. If he fought any other way, he wouldn't be the Mosley that has had the success that he has.
He fought everybody. Didnt always win, but how many times have we slagged off other fighters for not doing what Mosley has done!
I just have to believe that Shane knew history is knocking on his front door. Sometimes, fights like that are more important than money.
Mosley has always made me think his talent is a little wasted in that he will go toe to toe even when he doesn't have to. I knew he was gonna have trouble with Mayorga because I knew he was going in there to outslug Mayorga. The fight played out exactly as I expected. He goes in there to throw heavier shots than his opponent. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I don't know if he is worn out but he is definately still doing the same thing which makes him look worn out when he goes against a big tough opponent who would prefer the trade off toe to toe action rather than a boxing match.
Shane Mosley is a guy who relied too much on his athleticsm to get by. When his power boxing didn't work you saw what happened when he fought more skilled fighters like Forrest and Winky for example he really had no plan B and lacked the ability to adjust. I wouldn't say he wasted his talents but he didn't seem to envolve as a fighter that much. His lack of a jab and movement are the best examples of that.
if he stayed at lower weights he could have been one of the best fighters ever. still a great career though and has made good money
he never wasted his talent, he tried to fulfill his potential by fighting the best fighters even if they where at a different weight class. shane mosley could have gone down as one of the best lightweight fighters of all time, but he never had the big money fight there, he never waited for the big fight, he chased it. that's why he jumped from 135 to 147, at 147 he could get the chance to fight delahoya and vernon forrest. he has always been a very good welterweight, and a decent jr middleweight but his best days where at 135. if he stayed at 135 he could have got just as big fights against the likes of castillo, corrales, mayweather and casamayor. after sustaining his legacy he could have moved through the weight classes with nothing to lose as his legacy has already been cemented, similar to what bernard hopkins has done. the right time for mosley to move up in weight would have been in 2003, he could have then challenged the likes of kostya tszyu, zab judah and ricky hatton at 140, and moving up in weight he would be able to get the fights with delahoya, vernon and winky at the right time for him. I don't think shane mosley wasted his talent, he just made the wrong carreer movees.
