Yes, dear, he did. Now go to sleep. You have a big day at school tomorrow.

Results and punching power are not the same.

I would submit McClellan and Jackson punched harder than Robinson, but prime Robinson's total skill package made him more dangerous as he could by virtue of offensive mastery deliver his punches to the target more efficiently, or through conditioning and a granite chin endure long enough to deploy his offense.

Shavers punched harder than Foreman, but Foreman had an iron jaw, a much better jab that was highly damaging, cut the ring off masterfully, used his arms to occupy punching lanes, and used his freakish strength to push people who tried to work inside out into George's cannon range. On top of this he had an Olympic gold medal pedigree.

Shavers didn't have these attributes or experience. He's the equivalent of a .50 caliber revolver. You're much better off with a 15 round clip .40 automatic.

    Yes in a word.

Too many common opponents and sparring partners said it to dismiss them all.

It just shows that power isn't everything.

You know, as old men now (and not old in a boxing sense, but in actual real life) I wonder if Shavers and Foreman still have some sort of punch left?

I read that Shavers tried out for a role in one of the Rocky movies and he was sparring with Sylvester Stallone and at first it was just some light sparring, just moving around really.

Stallone said he wanted Shavers to really hit him. Shavers told him no and he didn't think that was a good idea. But Stallone kept egging him on and Shavers kept refusing. Finally since Stallone wouldn't leave well enough alone, Shavers hit him with a body shot.

Stallone said he must have blacked out because next thing he knew, he was in the bathroom throwing up in the toilet and he doesn't remember how he got to the bathroom.

Needless to say, Shavers didn't get the role. I think he was trying out for the role that Mr. T ended up getting.

I think Foreman and Shavers are tied at 68 knockouts.

It could have been that Shavers couldn't land clean on Quarry.

They say the last thing a fighter loses is his punch. So I'm guessing yes!

It's hard to dismiss it, when so many say it, even though the answers tend to be unreliable, when so many agree, he had to have a hell of a punch. Still I was hoping there'd be a bit more too it. To be clear I'm not trying to be a contrarian saying he didn't hit harder, just airing my doubts. There's still plenty for me to learn.

Yep, it was for Rocky III - Stallone trained very hard for that one, and felt he was the equivalent of a decent six-round fighter. Stallone also spent a few rounds with Joe Frazier and Roberto Duran during some of the earlier Rockys (stated afterwards his arms were black and blue for days after taking so many shots from Duran) ...

The lesson here: no matter how much your potential boss insists, NEVER punch him in the liver.

You cannot get too much better evidence than what virtually everyone who fought Shavers & Otho Heavy hitters say
Also it is pretty basic that results do not equate to just pure power
Skill endurance & chin mean a great deal too

I love Stallone & the Rocky movies but I doubt he was very good compared to pros>even though in superb shape
Go to youtube & see his brother Frank do a wicked good impression of him when describing sly getting a few of these "quick as cats" boxers to unload on him a bit including Frazier in pimp like regalia

Ken Norton who fought Foreman, Shavers, and Cooney said Shavers punched the hardest. Larry Holmes said of all his opponents Shavers hit the hardest as well. According to Holmes, Tyson, Cooney, and Norton all hit hard, but Earnie Shavers was in a league by himself.

It did seem in that fight that Shavers did land a good right on Quarry before they started mixing it up and Quarry pounded on him.

You are right....On a good copy of the fight film, you can hear Quarry's Mgr. Gil Clancy say: "Careful Jerry, careful".
