Did Shavers really hit harder than the likes of George Foreman?

He landed clean several times before Quarry timed his right hand and won the fight.

Perhaps Foreman's had a different kind of power. More heavy hands, he could move you with glancing blows. He didn't put guys out for a 10 count. Shavers had that snap power as opposed to Foreman's thud. You might not see Ernie's punches coming as easily.

Good point. There is a difference in brute strength power, and sharp power.

Shavers was a lot quicker and more explosive than Foreman, and tended to sell out on punches a lot more. With Foreman, when he really went for it fighters could see his punches coming a mile away and avoid them most times. It's when they didn't that you could see his truly freakish power. Fighters would literally get thrown around the ring.

    That never happened with Shavers.

Earnie was quite good at disguising his punches as well. He had that sneaky left bodyshot overhand combo that caught more than one fighter out, and an over the jab counter right hand that gave Ali kittens. He was also very good at picking his shots to the body to soften the head upstairs, and was very dangerous against the ropes.

Thing is Cooney knocked Norton into a blubbering heap and Tyson knocked Holmes unconscious. Not saying Norton and Holmes aren't giving their genuine opinions on the matter, but their words have to be tempered by what actually happened as well.

They were both past it during those fights. Tyson had the speed to get to old Larry. Punch for lunch for Shavers may still hit harder.

They may have been past it, but Holmes could still take a hard punch and Norton was able to battle prime Holmes to a standstill

Shavers is what youd call the "glass cannon" trope in fiction and writing. Or for a video game example, spending all your points on one stat and neglecting the rest.

The difference between foreman and shavers power probably wasnt by a huge amount, its just that power was literally the only good thing about shavers until he started working on his stamina, skill, timing, etc. He was average in height and weight for the era and could be pretty predictable and relatively easy to outbox or counter.

With foreman you had a behemoth who was brought along carefully with olympic amateur experience. He had a wide variety of punches including hooks, uppercuts, body shots, etc, not to mention a thudding jab. He was bigger than the majority of opponents with freakish strength and had an iron chin and underrated skill. Foreman was also a much better finisher than shavers.

With foreman u had a lot more to worry about than just power. With shavers, that was pretty much all he brought to the table. He gassed quickly and had a suspect chin, so if u could take him out early or survive the early onslaught and box his head off u won.

I wonder if Quarry felt that Shavers hit harder than Mac Foster?

I will name another fighter like Ernie Shavers.

    Curtis Sheppard.

Not the best of his era, but pretty much everybody who tasted his power, said that he was the hardest puncher that they ever faced!

These were people who fought Louis and Baer!

It's interesting how some fighters have that affect on who they fought no matter the outcome. Definitely shows that skill level doesn't equal power and that there are some people who, no matter the fight outcome, can hit harder enough to leave a major impression on everyone.
