Who cares what the casual boxing fans interpret it as?

We can look at those fighters, and see that they were net assets to his resume.

I personally don't care what uninformed fans claim since their opinions are uninformed. However, the question is whether having a Bum of the Month Club on his resume helped or hurt his reputation. I just can't don't see how it helps. So I guess we differ in opinion.

He lost to Schmeling, Charles, and Marciano, all three of which were heavyweight champions so your math is wrong.

He beat Schmeling. He didn't say in six of eight fights, he said six of eight champs.

Like, Lennox Lewis beat every man he fought as a pro.

Lewis had two losses, to Rahman and McCall, but he also beat them in rematches. So he has wins over every man he fought as a pro.

    Nope.Here is my post.

"Louis fought 8 world heavyweight champions , beating 6 of them. His reputation is secure."

He beat Schmeling in the re-match so he has the following heavyweight champions scalps on his belt.
    Carnera
    Sharkey
    Schmeling
    Braddock
    Baer
    Braddock

    TOTAL = SIX
    Still have trouble reading then.lol

Joe Louis is, and rightfully so, universally 1 or 2 ATG hwt champion. Has been that way for decades. Nothing in his record "hurts" him. It would be very difficult to rate him higher or find a hwt champion who is given as much expert praise. And it's been that way for decades.

I meant uninformed. The computer spell checker replaced a slight misspelling with that "uniform" word and it got by me. Thanks for pointing that out. LOL!

If someone today watches all the available film of Louis's fights, read up all the books on him, speak to people who saw him that are still alive, would they qualify as an expert?

Your question has no point. The idea is Louis is ALREADY rated as high as one fighter can possibly be rated aside possibly from Ali. It's been that way for many decades.

The so-called "Bum of the Month" title defenses kept Joe Louis busy and put some money in his pockets. No one had to light a fire under Louis to get him into the ring when he was the world heavyweight champion. One can't say that about many of the other world heavyweight champions.

Would a patzer of the month club list on his record have hurt Bobby Fisher or helped him?

The question is did it help his reputation as being a great boxer.
To me his reputation as a great boxer doesn't rest or depend on a bum of the month list just as Bobby Fisher's reputation as a great chess player would never depend on his playing a list of patzers under the tile of bums of the month.
