Didn't really hurt boxing as the hardcore fans will always be there, but it definitely did not help because the casuals did not get a war, which is what draws new people in
Casuals want street fights, not boxing. Floyd is Quantum Physics to this sweet science, they want Bio 101.
It hurt it in terms of gaining new fans. None of the general public who bought into it enjoyed it...and they especially didn't enjoy spending money on it. There is never enough hype or publicity around fire fights which might interest a newbie (Provo Matthysse - Maidana Broner) Froch Groves did good for the sport. Khan Brook would do good for the sport
Didn't really hurt it but wasted a great opportunity to gain new fans Doubt many people became boxing fans after that
Since I did a thread on it last night, I'll repeat the sport of Boxing is the biggest loser of them all.
I agree, wasted opportunity to gain fans. Just goes to show just because the fight involves 2 popular or mega stars in a mega fight doesn't mean it's going to be a classic or a great fight. Delahoya-Trinidad and Mayweather-Gatti proved this. But the fans demanded this and it turned out ok. Not a dud, not great, but ok. Matthysse-Provodnikov was much better than this.
I thought it was far from ok. I thought it was a total piece of **** disgrace. It would have been ok if it wasn't hyped for five long years as the biggest fight of the century and didn't charge 100 for ppv. The mega fight that was going to 'save boxing'.
