    Good point.

Larry Holmes did the same thing for the IBF.

It was a minor title in the 80's and 90's but but to great champions holding

the belt and the WBO is the organzation with the least outlandish junk

around it. To meet the WBC is the most corrupt, the WBA creates two

champions for every divisions, the IBF had a scandal in the 90's were

they sold their ranking so by default the WBO has become the best of

    a bad bunch

It only became relevant when Joe Calzaghe won it.

Agree. They've also had some of the best champs of recent times, Hamed, Pac, Calzaghe, Klits, Collins, Eubank, Margarito, Cotto, Winky, Marquez, Barrera, Tapia, Calderon, and many more.

NO it did not. When Mike Tyson was the Undisputed Heavyweight Champion of the world he had the WBC-WBA & IBF. He lost to Buster who lost it to Holyfield. Holy was the Undisputed HW Champ and Ray Mercer was the WBO titlist.

The Ring has lost all credibility since Golden Boy has purchased it.You please your masters and the Ring is doing just that.It has been comprimised and it is a shame.Nat Fleisher must be rolling in his grave.

The WBO was a completely fringe belt at first. (I mean, when it's 1989, Tyson is in his prime, and your heavyweight champ is Francisco Damiani... well, that says something). It didn't gain any mainstream notice until the mid-90s or so, and it was in the late to end of the 90s that it gradually was accepted as another legit belt.

i am pretty sure it got excepted in Europe A lot earlier than on my side of the pond. I remember being a teenager and thinking WTF is the WBO belt. then i heard about the infamous frank ****** who some thought basically ran the show with the WBO which was looked upon as a glorified European belt. I know some (non-euro) fighters who held the belt were not considered the champ (only in hind sight has that changed). I think Joe did make it legit in Europe but I think in north America, it was a matter of enough of the top guys were fighting for it that it became accepted. It was long before the Kbros (who do not have a large following over here, except the hardcore).

In hindsight, it seems the WBO made a massive blunder in not simply awarding Mike Tyson their inaugural heavyweight title in '88.
