Did this fight put into perspective for anyone Margarito's victory over Cotto? There was a lotta talk about how Margo won that fight because of loaded gloves but imo this fight seemed alot like that one. I think if Clottey had a bit more power, just a bit, than he would have ko'd Cotto.
So is Marg still a fighter that only beat Cotto cuz of cheating when Clottey had him on the backfoot on night?
Very good point. There's no evidence for that loaded glove thing, and if this fight shows anything, it shows how BADLY Cotto reacts to being cut. If Clottey hit a bit harder he would have gotten him out of there. Hell, if he threw punches at ALL in the last two rounds, he would have WON.
He was hurt in this fight for sure but his face doesnt look nowhere near as bad as it did in the margarito fight. Not to mention clottey had a much better defence than margarito and cotto did not get stopped.
Margo didn't need loaded gloves to beat Cotto... just good ol' fashioned effective pressure. Clottey might have stopped Cotto here, but his pressure wasn't very effective as he simply couldn't track Cotto down and most importantly, he doesn't throw as many punches as Margo does.
All clottey had to do was stay with some more pressure and it would have been automatic "LIGHTS OUT"....EXPOSED AGAIN!:deal
Cotto can't turn you around in the middle of the ring like an athletic fighter would, i.e SHANE MOSLEY, therefore he circles the ring and gets HIT while doing so---> not a good look, and going to cost him more fights in the welterweight division.
it would have been the same fight all over again if Clottey was busier. Remember that marg threw a lot more and even if they werent landing clean, they were still hitting his arms and shoulders which made Cotto get even more tired.
The blows he was landing to Cotto's body did a lot of damage as well. There is also a very important thing that I think doesn't get discussed much. Cotto does something very very dangerous that I remember really sticking out in the Margo fight, he wins an exchange and then backs off and walks to the other side of the ring for no reason. I don't know why he does it but he did it in this fight to. This is a scary thing to see and when I saw it again tonight I knew that it was a different Cotto at 147 than the one at 140.
Assuming he didnt load his gloves in that fight... He stops Cotto again imo. Cotto hit Margarito better than anything he hit Clottey with. So assuming Margarito's chin can still take good punishment after the Mosley fight (most likely it can), he would beat Cotto again by KO.
