'porter smothers his own work' has become a catchphrase rather than an actual ****ysis. 7-5 thurman imo, great fight.
I think the bigger problem for Porter was backing up too much and fighting off the back foot for too many stretches. I don't know if it was a tactical error or if his conditioning let him down, but Thurman eked it out in the late stages for me as a result. I had it 7-5 Keith, too.
Good point, and I believe DLH's determination is the reason why he finished the fight on his feet. He had that similar look to him as he did when Pac was beating him pillar to post. Mosley clearly won the last 5 rounds of that fight so at best 7-5 DLH, at best. About Thurman/Porter, folks claiming to be real boxing fans because they score clean effective punching, but only for this fight apparently, When it's Maidana vs Mayweather, they are scoring it the opposite. Boxing snobbery, though I cannot argue against Thurman winning. I had it a draw but at least 2 rounds that were literal tossups.
Somehow Cotto won a few fights going backwards. People score so inconsistently. I think Porter and his corner was conscious of Thurman's power and accuracy, also stamina was at play.
People do score inconsistently. Good point on Cotto. I just didn't like that when Porter did it, he was right in Keith's optimal range. It showed up as Thurman having superior ring generalship in the stretch run. I had it a draw after 10, but Thurman swept the 11th and 12th for me. A rematch is winnable for Porter, but he's going to have to be in solid 15 round condition to do it.
Porter let Thurman walk him down, that´s what gave Thurman the edge in a few rounds and he got a deserved victory. But a draw would have been the fairest of outcomes.
Porter beat on Thurman but Thurman couldn't hurt Porter to the same degree. If it was so close, it's odd that the judges were unanimous. That smells.
if they actually put in the same cards it'd smell, but just reaching the same score aint that, especially when that's the score that won the esb 'how did you score it' poll.
What else would you call it? Porter, it seemed, was trying to body Thurman so that Thurman wouldn't have any room to throw. The only problem with that is that Porter was so damn close he couldn't land anything effective. Porter could have taken a step, or half a step back, and then unloaded to the body and head. He would have gotten way more leverage on his shots. Porter did manage to do that in a few rounds, but never to the degree that changed the fight or had Thurman seeking to make an adjustment. That's why I, and others, believe that Porter was "smothering" his work. I think Porter's loyalty to his dad is going to prevent him from ever realizing his full potential. Like I said previously, his dad offered him ZERO advice. I forgot what round it was in that Porter hurt Thurman to the body, and do you know what Porter's dad told him after that round? Not a damn thing. I don't even think he mentioned it. :-( I think a trainer like Joe Goossen would do wonders for Porter. Goossen wouldn't try and change him, but smooth out the rough edges in Porter's game. Oh well. Thurman won and at this point I don't see why a rematch is warranted.
atsch Did you even watch the fight? Thurman buckled Porter's knees on a few occasions. The only time Thurman was visibly hurt was when Porter got in a good body shot. Don't know what fight you were watching.
Well you shouldn't be wearing Fraud Mayweather's nuts as eyeglasses. Ain't no way you are going to see a fight that way.
I think Thurman won. Porter just needed to be cleaner with his shot. When he had the advantage which was clearly when he was mauling Thurman. He backed off around the 7th on wards this allowed Thurman to dictate the fight.Thurman was a bit more smarter with his work. I think the IQ was in favor of Thurman.Porter just wasn't smart enough.
Lost some vCash on Porter, I was actually thinking that Thurman would probably win, but I wanted Porter to, he is easier to like as he doesn't refer to himself in either plural form, or in 3rd person which put him miles ahead of Thurman. Hard fight to score, having watched it now. Thurman handled the pressure better than I thought he would, and while he wasn't as strong as Porter, he didn't get mauled in the way I hoped. I could see a draw, or a close decision either way. Sometimes I find it hard to score a fight when I already know who won, because I think that biases me, as I either try to understand what the judges were, or were not thinking. However, this one seemed pretty reasonable, so I cannot complain. I would love to see a rematch.
