Did Tony Ross almost have a Ketchel moment vs. Jack Johnson?

Incidentaly reports of the August 1911 fight between Ross and Jeannette vary wildly with both getting credit for the win but certainly Ross showed well against as good a fighter as Joe.

    That seems correct.

I also notice that Sam Langford seems to have got quite a lot of credit for beating Ross.

Ross wasn't very good. As I mentioned his record leading up to the Johnson fight was dismal, and he was already Ko'd 4 times. His final record reads 24-14-6, with 10KO losses, though it looks a poster found a new win for him. Ross beating the above fighters ( some were old when he fought them ) shows how average that group was.

I guess he had his moment against Johnson in his absolute prime.

In 1909 Johnson was outboxed according to primary sauces by O'Brien, stung by Ross, and floored by Ketchel.. Short men two under the super middleweight limit( NO way Ketchel was 170 pounds ) , the other a with poor record in his last 7 fight leading up to the title match. He also was knocked silly by Gunboat Smith. One poster notes Johnson's first defense could have been against Ed Martin, and based on Johnson's 1909 results you'd have to give Martin ( age 27 ) in 1909 a chance to do well.

More on the Smith 4 round ex match ( from a different source this time )

    JOHNSON KNOCKED DOWN.
    IN A TRAINING BOUT.
    SAN FRANCISCO, October 12.—"Gun-
boat" Smith, an able seaman, U.S.N.,
punched his way from a pugilistic gun-
boat to a real Dreadnought of the ring,
when in the fourth round of his exhi-
bition bout with Jack Johnson, the heavy-
weight champion of the world, he knock-
ed that pugilistic phenom. to the canvas
at Johnson's training quarters at the Seal
    Rock house.

And it was no fluke knockdown. Com-
ing out of a clinch near the end of the
last round ''Gunboat' swung a right over-
hand chop which took Johnson flush on the
chin. The negro went down as prettily
as any fighter ever hit the matted ring,
and when he got up he was dazed so
    much that George Little, Johnson'smana-
ger and timekeeper, called time, cutting
the ground short fully a minute and see-
ing to it that the naval scrapper did no
more sparring with the champion during
    the rest of the afternoon.

Smith had shown in the first three
rounds that he boxed that he could reach
Johnson with a right over-hand chop, and
he landed this blow on Johnsonfrequent-
ly. Smith and Johnson slammed each
other around good and hard, and the fans
who visited the Seal Rock camp to wit-
ness the sparring exhibition felt before
the end of the second round of the Smith-
Johnson bout was over that they were
    seeing the real thing.

From the moment he donned the gloves
up to the last round Smith displayed
little fear of Johnson's hitting ability
and he mixed punches with him at every
    opportunity.

You tried to **** on Johnson once again and once again it backfired spectacularly on you. Ross landed only one punch of any significance on Johnson and no paper suggested he was in danger of being kod or floored.
Regurgitating a sparring session has absolutely nothing to do with the thread ,your thread!
    Much Ado About Nothing.
    Here is the fight report.
    Pittsburgh Press.
"Johnson still carried much of the weight so noticeable in his bout with
O Brien.Sports writers believed he had been lax in his training".

    Pittsburgh Post.
The bout nearly ended in the first round. In the last ten seconds of the round,Johnson dropped Ross with a series of hard rights and lefts to the head.Referee Buck Connelly was in the process of counting him out,but the ringing of the bell saved him.
Ross was lying on the floor, out cold with his face bloodied.
From the 2nd round on Ross covered up at every opportunity, not wanting to open up and expose himself to dangerous blows.
Johnson was smiling continually from ear to ear.
He obviously held his opponent cheaply.
Throughout,Johnson used his left jab, hitting the nose on nearly every occasion. When he missed the nose,he landed on the lip ,or the eye.
Before the 3rd round was over Ross was cut to ribbons.
Ross was so afraid that he was unable to lay a glove on Johnson until the 4th rd,when he landed a few short arm jolts to the chin.
However in the 5th rd Tony was again cautious.
In the 6th rd,Ross let out a bit and managed to land two blows through the champ' clever defense, though neither one did any harm.
At the conclusion of the 6th rd,Ross was the happiest person in the vast auditorium, for the beating was over"
So an overweight champion once again took advantage of a fight being a 6 round no decision,to come in out of shape, and won as he wished ,without being in any difficulty or going full out at any time.

In the words of that blustering fool who runs your country now .

    FAKE NEWS! LOL
