I'm wondering what people's views are regarding Tyson's pain threshold?

I can recall seeing Tyson in bouts when cut, crying and making women gestures in there, surely a man of his reputation shouldn't feel so much pain in the middle of an adrenaline filled battle??

We have warriors like Vitali getting cut up like mince meat yet not one murmur, opinions please...

I remember the 1st Holyfield fight back in 96, in between rounds a cornerman of Tyson's was applying something to Tyson's cut, and it sounded like he was Whimpering like some high school girl, my girlfriend at the time said , ok the guy with the Heart problems, who's 4 years older with much more wear and tear on his body is roaring along, and the guy who's always cussing at everybody playing the tough guy act, surrounding himself with rappers is sobbing like a little baby over a cut on his eye:lol:, FIGURES....

Jeez louise a guy with a bad heart is kicking your overrated ass and your crying over a little cut:conf..

Tyson had a long career i CAN'T EVER think of 1 single fight where he had to come from behind to win...:-(

Tyson is the typical school yard bully, tries to intimidate everybody and take everything by force but when the quiet Southern kid from the back of the class get's tired of your **** (HOLYFIELD) and calls your bluff and starts kicking your ass, you fold like a cheap 100 dollar suit from JCPenny's...

To answer your ? Tyson DIDN'T have the pain threshold of Ali, Holmes, and certainly NOT Holyfield:-(

Guess that's why later in his career he turned into a circus act when he started losing which was often, the biting, trying to break arms, etc..

Yeah good post, hell he was even worse in between rounds against Lewis. The man definitely couldn't take it as much as he could give it that's for sure.

I'll have to correct you, he did comeback and beat the legendary Frans Botha, a guy that carried dynamite in his gloves....:rofl:rofl

Ahhhhhh yes thanks a bunch for reminding me about the infamous Botha fight when another near riot almost broke out (Tyson tried to snap his arm)when Mikey the lisp had another meltdown/temper tantrum because Botha won the 1st round and Tyson knew he was in there with a guy he couldn't intimidate:-(

Typical bully street thug mentality when your opponent follows the rules and is winning the fight lets try and break his arm:verysad..

This BS happened again in 2005, when that idiot was getting his a$$ handed to him by Kevin Mcbride and he bit Mcbride on his CHEST:twisted: THANKFULLY Mcbride made his ass quit in shame, and that was the end of him and his sorry a$$ BS dirty fighting/antics FOREVER:clap:

Thank you Kevin Mcbride for retiring that a$$hole/circus act, FOR GOOD:party

No he didn't but he was mentally weak in his second career, partly due to drug use

If you think he had a weak pain threshold, try boxing at your local gym and see how long you last without pulling out. Most of the guys on this forum would quit pretty quick.

Point taken, but also take into consideration that most guys in this forum are not supposed to be ATG fighters... you would expect more from Tyson

The point is that Tyson's pain threshold was certainly very weak compared not to the regular Joe, but compared to guys like Ali, Frazier, Vitali, Foreman, Holmes, Chuvalo, etc.

Just think about Chuvalo, for example; the guy weathered some of the worst artillery barrages in the history of boxing and never was knocked down. He was not a skilled fighter, but he was toughness incarnated. His fight with Foreman was stopped only after he got his nose broken.... for the life of me, I can't imagine Tyson ever pulling a similar level of toughness.

If Tyson had such a low pain threshold he'd quit much quicker against Holyfield and Douglas, he took tons of punishment in both fights. I suggest rewatching both fights.

Just because he didn't turn fights around bar a couple of times doesn't mean he had a low pain threshold. Part of the reason he didn't usually comeback in his fights was because he started so fast and was usually dominant, still Smith, Bruno and Rudduck hurt him. He tried to comeback in the Holyfield and Douglas fights but couldn't turn them around.

A large part of the reason he couldn't turn these fights around is because of his disadvantages in height and reach because it's much harder to turn a fight around with such disadvantages.

And Tyson never quit like Vitali because his shoulder hurt either. As for CHuvalo, he has a great chin, could roll with the punches while tucking up while not offering much back, in the word's of his countrywomen Shania Twain 'it don't impress me much'

well put. You don't get to the level the Tyson achieved without having an amazing pain threshold both mentally and physically. The second part of his career he was there to support your lifestyle.

I am NOT a Mike Tyson apologist but you cannot be critical of what he did in the on his way to winning the title. He beat everybody it was in his way. He cleared out the entire division.

I've tried it mate and it's not the pain that makes you think about quitting it's the fatigue, of course you know this??

I think you're missing the point, getting buzzed and rocked doesn't exactly cause pain, I'm talking about the cuts he suffered where he was crying like a girl. I've suffered cuts in fights and not even noticed so a fighter of Tyson's calibre shouldn't be screaming like he'd just been shot, very strange behaviour from a top professional.

Tyson did far worse. He quit against Mcbride for no reason at all.
