Haven't read the thread, but I sure as hell wouldn't have wanted to get hit with some of the shots Tyson took in the Ruddock fights, the Douglas fight, the Holyfield fights and of course the Lewis fight. Hell Lewis alone must have hit him clean with over hand rights about a dozen times. Say what you want about him not coming back in fights, but the guy could take a punch, and anyone who goes 8 rounds getting the **** kicked out of him, the way Lewis did, gets my respect and shows he has plenty of heart. But like Chuvalo, he simply didn't have the tools to put up much of a counter attack.
It is a tragic case really of such a gifted, talented fighter who had the perfect start to his career, the perfect corner and from that he went to the worst corner in the world. Tragic.
Tyson always was a head case. Constantly not being challenged covers up this so its invisible. Once challenged it was obvious what his defects as a fighter were. All between the ears.
True enough, but I don't think getting mixed up with King did him any good either. If you think about what King does, which is essentially to ripe off the some of the toughest men on the planet, not serving time, it takes some *****, to ripe off the likes of Tyson, Holyfield, Holmes etc.
^ What is this thread about Perry? Tyson being tough and taking his lumps is the point most are making. Its clearly a hate thread that has attempted to make Tyson look like a crying school girl.
I don't hate any fighter. I am telling the truth as I see it. My opinion on Tyson is his skills equated to that of a great fighter. Every fighter however has his Achilles heel. Tysons Achilles heal was in his head. I write this as someone who has watched the hwt scene since 1968 Ian's has studied every hwt champion since Jeffries.
I think this thing of Tyson as a quitter is a myth. He took brutal punishment against Douglas, Holyfield and Lewis. And, yeah, he stayed down against Lewis, but can't say I blame him. He was getting brutalized with no chance of winning. He came from behind to win about as many times as Frazier. Was Joe also a quitter?
The ear bite was a massive quit job. I thought he actually redeemed himself with the Lewis fight though. People say he could have got up, it's possible. But he could have gone down a lot sooner too, he took some huge punishment in that fight.
I'm not really directing the hating towards you, more that you seem to be off the subject of what this hating thread is about, although I'm not exactly sure what its about at this point! I also acknowledge Tyson's shortcomings, I think once the self doubt started there were problems, I'm talking post prison. I also am of the belief he would always have had trouble with Holy. When he had that winning mentality in his prime nothing seemed to bother him, when you watch those old fights you can see a few moments of success from his opponents but he just walked through it to the point most viewers miss these things because they were such dominant wins/finishes. He could get out boxed in his prime but he maintained composure, the Tucker fight for example, he got clipped with a few uppercuts and decent right hands early but kept his head and walked Tucker down over 12 rounds. A post prison Tyson was discouraged by an opponent breathing in his direction. The mentalities are totally different
This is what seems to happen when debating Tyson, his losses or negatives are viewed as more legacy destroying than other greats. Ali was well past his best against Holmes so that fight is seen as completely meaningless. Many think that the Lewis v Tyson result reflects what would actually happen, when in reality that fight is utterly meaningless, you cannot read anything from it, not one tiny thing. You can say Lewis might be better, but not base it on that fight!
yeah I hated Tyson for what he did in the Holyfield rematch. That was probably the fight I was most looking forward to in my life at the time, and Mike spat out his dummy ruining it for everyone. But again, post prison Tyson just didn't have the same mindset, Steve Lott made some really interesting points about that, about how Tyson would never have considered doing that when he was champ. At that point I gave up on Tyson being a force. I was glad he went out like a man against Lewis, he showed a bit of character there considering how he acted during the build up.
