There really is a strong argument that he was scared. he never tried to stare Holyfield down. He was acting scared in the centre of the ring

But he really did have his moments in the first fight which surely would of given him confidence. Holyfield wasnt hard for him to hit. I still dont subscribe to the feeling that Tyson couldnt outwork and outscore him even in 1996-97

He looked in amazing shape and was landing frequently. If bowe could hurt Holy surely mike could

I think we can all agree that there was something very wrong with Mike that night before the head butting and infamous retalition.

Didn't come in with the right fight plan. He was in tremedous shape but all he had to do was be the old Mike Tyson, that's what was missing. He was doing very well in the 3rd round and looked like the old Mike was coming back to a certent extent but than of course everything changed when the bite occured. It was probably nerves because when there's a lot of pressure on you to win, your nerves can get the best of you but IMO, I still think he could of won that second fight the way he looked.

Yea but giachetti didn't have him cut the ring off and attack Evander the way Kevin Rooney would of had him do. He also didn't have him attack his body with combinations the way Rooney would of had him.

He didn't lack belief, he just lacked self control.

    theres an argument both ways

That famous third round, is well as getting the odd bite or 5 in, he was really landing good shots on evander. he just lost the plot

Evander had more left at that stage, and always more inside.

Tyson knew he couldn't beat him. One of several factors that made him go berserk and foul out.

Holyfield was a man possessed against Tyson. He was prepared to do anything and find any way to win.

I seriously, seriously doubt that after prison, Tyson had that kind of effort and inner fortitude to go through such extremes. He sure never showed it: Every time the going got real tough after Tyson got out of the joint, he folded.

Pre-prison Tyson, and its a debate. Post prison, and Holyfield breaks him and spanks him every time.

Watching again, I believe you might have a good point that Mike wasn't quite right going in.

I think he just may have been psyched out. Teddy Atlas actually called that one right; Mike really wasn't doing well mentally at this stage.

Teddy Atlas is bonafide Tyson Hater, he discredits Tyson for everything, even when Tyson accomplished good things.

Doesn't change the fact he called the fight spot on. He said Tyson would foul out, and he did.

I don't think its that farfetched, looking back. Mike was hitting a wall in Evander at a damn fragile place in his life. Add that he was never really anything less than ferocious in the ring to begin with, and thats a recipe for **** going down.

We don't know if that's true though. He made that claim after the fight that he said that. But even if it is, Atlas doesn't like Tyson so he'll say anything to throw salt at mike.

Fairly credible, I'd say. But its not a hill I'd die on.

I still feel my point stands, as does Edge's, that Mike lacked mentally to win those fights. He didn't have it in him at that point, just too unstable. Or too something. Either way, rarely have we seen a great fighter meltdown quite that badly. If that doesn't prove he wasn't 100% right, nothing does.
