his muscles seemed really flat and soft against buster in 1990. a sign of sudden weight loss i think i heard a rumour that he was 250 pounds a month before the fight
Tyson-Douglas may have been just like the bruno fight a year earlier... I heard he lost about 45lbs in the weeks leading up to the Bruno bout. If you've seen the Bruno fight you'll know what i mean; tyson was slow, head-hunting & even got hit a few times by Frank. Tyson's body also did not look all lean and cut up like it had pre-1989. Can anyone confirm that Mike lost a bunch of weight before the Douglas fight too?
I wouldn't doubt it. Tyson was at his cockiest during this stage of his career. Bowe was known for doing this too.
Something was not right, the signs were there (the Page knockdown/Jay Bright) it was a shame so few us saw this pre fight to take advantage of the 42/1 on offer... But come on, this Buster Douglas. Your Nan is odds on to beat him, if she frustrates him for half dozen rounds!
i saw an interview with Bill Cayton saying he knew for a fact that Tyson had to dehydrate himself to get down to 218lb, if i can find this ill post it up! EDIT: On a doc. called The Mike Tyson Story Kevin Rooney says this "About two weeks before the fight tyson realises his about 20 pounds over weight, so he goes on a crash diet"
considering the lifestyle he lived, and how bad he looked in the fight, its very plausible. tyson was way too arrogant at that stage,
Yeah, I've read that he starved down in the last couple of weeks. I think I read that in a book that I know longer have, by Montieth Illingworth, about Tyson, published around 1994. Tyson's training habits were obviously messed up by then. But at least he bothered to lose the weight.
After the Spinks fight he started to balloon up to 265+.......Fact not fiction. PLus the booze and almost completly stopping roadwork, well, you do the math, eventually you will run into someone who takes his job dead serious and Buster did take it serious for one fight in his lifetime when he fought Mike.
Since he was short and squat and ate like a pig between fights, he was bound to gain a lot of weight. He often ballooned to well over 250 pounds.
I heard this too. I think Tyson looks physically good but certainly not at his absolute beast or peak. But he did look a bit more swollen than he did say against Holmes.
