Since Lennox Lewis left his mark, it was assumed that to dominate heavyweight boxing in the 21st century, a fighter needed to be at least 6'5" and over 230 pounds. For a time, that belief held true. However, with Oleksandr Usyk—a more historically traditional sized heavyweight, standing 6'3" and weighing in the 220s—defeating two of the division's most prominent giants (multiple times), does this signal a return to traditionally sized heavyweights, many of whom had been hiding out in the cruiserweight division? Or is Usyk simply an outlier?
Even if he were the only example for the next fifty years, he's still KO'd what many (wrongly) believed was an absolute rule.
A bit of both Usyk is a sensational boxer better than these big guys Lewis and imo both Klitschko brothers, especially prime were also better than Aj and Fury Does Usyk beat wlad, vitali, Lewis? There is only one of those I would probably favour over usyk, but not certain I still think a good big un beats a good little guy, but Usyk is a teir above these guys in skill, maybe 2 tiers above Aj He also has an iron chin, so he can take what is dished out So to cut a long story short, size does matter, no matter what your wife says, but usyk is just much better
That wasn't a dig, but in ability he is. Aj can box, but it's his physical attributes that make him so good. Fury too, but Fury doesn't have that explosive power or athleticism, so he requires more skills
Dempsey at 190 defeated a 250 man over 100 yrs ago. A little guy with superior boxing skills can in fact defeat a bigger, slower, less skilled bigger guy.
Usyk is exceptional, and I dont think theres a big HW around right now who has the pure talent of a Lennox, Wlad, Vitali, Bowe etc.
at a certain size you reach a point of diminishing returns. the extra weight kills your stamina, kills your speed. so you only want to be as big as you need to be to be able to put a 300 lb man to sleep and to take a punch from a 300 lb man. that way you retain your wind and your speed, which will make you dominant over your slower, less fit competition. the problem is that modern hw athletes are lazy in comparison and dont push the stamina issue, so it becomes a question of mass. cain vs brock in mma is a good example of what it would look like in the wild.
