Bethea was only stopped once in his career and that was against Sonny Liston. He managed to survive some pretty big punchers. Do you think he had a top 10 heavyweight chin ?

I don't know much about him but I'm not sure about top 10.

    Oliver McCall
    Vitali Klitschko
    Larry Holmes
    Muhammad Ali
    George Foreman
    Evander Holyfield
    Mike Tyson
    Tex Cobb
    Marion Wilson
    Oleksandr Usyk
    George Chuvalo
    David Tua
    Ray Mercer

    Etc.

Would he replace either of them ? Maybe someone with more knowledge on him could help us out.

Yeah there’s a lot of durable guys. I’ll ad paulino Uzcadan to that list too

He would not have been stopped as quick as he was vs Liston if he had a top tier chin. Like Mercer or Holyfield would never be stopped in 1 round by anyone. Bethea had a good chin, not an ATG chin.

There's even some fighters like Pinklon Thomas I think he had an iron chin that's not talked about alot. This man literally took about 20 unanswered punches from Tyson literally full blooded shots Tyson had to literally nail him to the floor.

I can't think of many Heavyweights who could take a non stop barrage like that from a prime Tyson.

I could be wrong but I heard Liston knocked Bethea’s teeth out though. I mean isn’t that a reasonable exception to make ?

Bethea was a tomato can and not in top 100 for his chin.

Holyfield,Foreman,Chuvalo,McCall,Frazier,Ali,Marciano,Holmes,Tucker, Tua, Ike Ibeabuchi,Vitali, Mercer, Cobb, Frazier, Scrap Iron Johnson, Izon, Baer...

He's overhyped by Liston fan club.

I don't know too much about Bethea but I went to a gym that was owned by a guy who fought Liston, Williams, DeJohn, Summerlin, etc. and when asked who hit him the hardest, he always said Bethea. That doesn't mean that Bethea was a bigger puncher than the others, but Bethea landed the hardest punch on him.

Pinklon Thomas took punches as well as anybody I've seen. Watch the fight with Mike Weaver and Thomas gets hit by some punches from Weaver that he doesn't see coming and he takes them. Weaver was a huge puncher. I'd rate Pinkon Thomas's ability to take a punch with anybody and he also had a great jab.

Bethea is a contender for top ten when you consider he wasn't roided or as skilled as some of the top fellas like Holy, Ali, Frazier, Holmes etc you get hit a lot more and harder if you mix with the Listons, Williams, Coopers of the World. Personally, McCall is my man.

I've already asked myself the same question about George Chuvalo's fellow countryman Bob Cleroux.

BTW Johnny Summerlin might be another option.

I’ve never seen Cleroux fight but I’ve looked at his resume several times. Looks like a good fighter and yes he was never stopped
