I am fairly young, so peak boxing to me was from 1990s to about 2017. Around 2017 is when the sport started going to ****, maybe a bit earlier.
Every year has had some excellent matchmaking and great fights, but overall the sport is worse than it was a decade ago.

I went to counter you but then I realized youre right. Every era does have multiple ATGs. For whatever reason the past decade felt less rich. Maybe fallout from Floyd/Manny stepping away? IDK, but def felt like boxing had a quieter decade

Man wtf? The entire sport ran away from Crawford during this time. Golden period my ass.

Right before Mayweather - Pacquiao ending, we had the so called boxing cold war, with SHO and HBO in the US competing for ratings and putting on the best shows they possibly could. And a ton of other networks also showcased regular boxing, with the most famous being FNF on ESPN.

Wladimir Klitchko was not a fun heavyweight, most of the time, but he had a legitimate and active reign. Overall we had a lot more champions with long reigns in comparison to today.
The sport also picked up quite a bit in other countries, like Japan for instance. Yes, Japan had always produced world class boxers, but now more of the world had access to their fights as they happened.

The last decade this sport has gotten worse, same with MMA.

He wasted his prime years fighting once a year IMO and also didn’t help he didn’t fight Wilder or Fury. But no, I agree he wasn’t a hype job.

It was golden in the sense we had some amazing fighters. Guys that could challenge any opponent in history and were live. Crawford at 147, Inoue at 122 and perhaps 126 though he was stronger at '22, Usyk is likely the best CW ever and would hold his own at HW, clearly.

The ducking - largely by PBC fighters - mainly ruined those guys careers. They all made money but there are zero PBC fighters who achieved anything meaningful. Tank was closest but with a draw to Pitbull and a loss to Roach, plus all the ducking, I cant see him being regarded by anyone historically.

Definitely agree. I mean, this whole Jake Paul thing is insane but has been completely normalized. Boxing continues to teeter on obsolescence, at least in the US. Need evidence? 50 year old Floyd and Manny rematch is the most hyped event for 2026. Insanity.

We really need to get rid of the belt orgs. One belt per One weight class for One champion. Improve judging and the consequences for bad judging (should be aided significantly by AI). Strong/harsher penalties for cheats (Charlos are PED cheats who refused testing and got in no trouble). More active fighters with a better contender system, perhaps closer move to same-day weighin?

The sport becomes far more legitimate when that happens and perhaps people want to be part of the sport again.

Davis didn't draw with Pitbull. He won a clear points decision. And he didn't lose to Roach, it was a draw. (It helps to actually know the outcomes.)

Tank Davis also knocked out the then-undefeated and now reigning WBC Welterweight Champ Ryan Garcia.
Tank Davis also knocked out the then-undefeated and now reigning WBA Welterweight Champ Rolly Romero.
Tank Davis also knocked out the then-undefeated and recent WBC Welterweight Champ (who Garcia just won the title on points from) Mario Barrios.
Tank Davis, again, also beat the current reigning WBC Super Lightweight Champ Isaac "Pitbull" Cruz.

Basically, the top of the current welterweight division are all guys that posters here called bums back when Tank Davis was the first to beat them and knock them out.

His title run in a single division (lightweight), in hindsight, was one of the better runs in recent memory, in terms of quality of opposition.

So, time to change the "old" box you guys put Tank Davis in.

Davis, for all his problems, still has more wins over the current top guys than just about anyone mentioned in the first post.

A golden era of ducking and avoidance.

At this point I don't think the belts are even an issue themselves, or well, the fact that we have 4 major sanctioning bodies.

Judging has to move to AI, it simply has to happen. It likely wont be available for every card there is, but at least championship events would be covered.
Same day weigh-ins have to be brought back, and many of the filler divisions needs to be eradicated.

If you think Davis had a clear decision over Pitbull and didnt lose to Roach, you have much larger issues than anything talked about in this thread

Except, officially, he did both. So saying he lost is pointless, because he didn't.

And the top of the junior welter and welterweight divisions are now positioned with guys he's already beaten or stopped.

Tank beat Devin Haney? Shakur Stevenson? Teofimo?

I'm sure you had Ward over Kovalev in 1st fight and Paul Williams over Lara, too
