Did Wilfred Benitez ruin his legacy by boxing after 1983?

    Fellas,

I wanna keep this short and to the point.... We all know Wilfred Benitez was a slick and savvy boxer in his prime-time days.... No doubt there... However, the question is, after Wilfred Benitez lost to Tommy Hearns in 1982 and was mauled by Mustafa Hamsho in 1983, should Wilfred Benitez had just gone and retired for good?

It is only my opinion, but I think Wilfred Benitez embarrassed himself a great deal when he carried on into the middle 80s losing by KO to the likes of "Davey Moore & Matt Hilton."

    Gimmie some feedback here....:bbb

Definitly he should have retired, but not because of this damaging his legacy but his health.

my thoughts on this are the same as they are when it comes to any great fighter when not fighting at his best anymore. when i think about rjj/tyson/ali/srr/louis etc........i almost ignore their final losses and just think about them at their peaks. (come on its not hard to imagine tyson beating kevin mcbride, or ali beating berbick) its just hard to give up boxing and i understand that and i dont think these great fighters should be looked down upon for not being able to leave the only thing they know.

almost every fighter fights past his prime, but that doesnt take away from what they acomplished inside the ring, and benitez did something that wont be repeated again.. he won a profesional world title at the age of 17

Yeah, but Benitez and Donald Curry seemingly went to hell over-night...... Suddenly they just didn't have it anymore......

The Moore loss doesnt have any saying whatsoever for Benitez to continue on his career. Benitez broke his ankle midway through the round, Moore knew something was wrong with him and threw a bazillion punches but only landed like 7, Benitez took no punishment in this fight. If he had retired right after the Hearns loss though, his legacy would of been more sugar coated for sure.

But Benitez looked shot against Moore......... He was brittle and frail...... He came into the ring looking like he just crawled outta bed with a Ho.... Meanwhile, Davey Moore was in his corner looking pumped and psyched prior to the opening bell.......

Mr. Bill: Wilfred Benitez was ruined by Gregorio "Goyo" Benitez, his father.

Ruined financially........... The late Greg Benitez was a degenerate gambler....... He pissed away Wilfred's cash at the casino....... That is one reason why Wilfred Benitez carried on beyond his best years... He needed the money....... His father was a *******o.....

Benitez always thought if he lost a fight he should move up, but he fought great at 154 against Hope and Duran and Hearns. He should have stayed at 154 and tried to get another title shot. Moving up to middleweight was a mistake. Had he stayed at 154 after Hearns and fought soon after and not waited for awhile like he did after the loss to Hearns, he might have kept on winning and won another title at 154.

Benitez's kept fighting because that is all he had ever known, that and he had money issues (that's an understatement). His father was a detriment Benitez, blowing his money and providing no decent guidance. Wifred was somewhat mentally challenged, just not a bright guy away from the boxing gym.

Legacy's aren't ruined by going on to long, period.
