Only to an extent......... Guys like "Louis and Ali" finished ugly or sub-par, but they still have their legends intact.......... Why? Because they only allowed a couple of losses near or at the tail-end when they were past it......

And then we have guys like Matthew Saad Muhammad and Iran Barkley who were good fighters / champions in there heyday hanging on forever and finishing up WAY UGLY!!

OH! Let's add Simon Brown and Meldrick Taylor to the list of ending up ugly as all hell, too...

    No, why should it?

Most fighters fight on too long. It may affect their legacy slightly, but surely not that much.

It did mess up his health, sadly. The guy is in terrible shape now.

Taylor never had a legacy, as sad as that may be.

I agree there........ But HBO sure as hell tried to pump that S.O.B. up to the max........ Now Taylor stutters and mumbles through sentences, etc..

    :patsch:shock:

Taylor was a very good fighter. HBO was seriously on his nuts though against Chavez. Everything he did elicited an orgasmic response from Lampley, even if it was missing a 6 punch combo.

I doubt he would've had a legacy as a great though, Chavez or not. Weight problems at 140 and too much talent at WW around that time.

Wilfred Benitez didn't ruin his legacy by going on to long because none of the losses ever outweighed the fact he became the youngest world champion in history. Having competitive fights with some of the fabulous four certainly helped his staying power in the mind's of the hardcore, also. Too answer the thread, Benitez's legacy is intact.

Yes, but people tend to forget the early stats and merely recall the tail-end...... History works in strange ways......

Benitez fought great until he moved up to middleweight. He fought almost better at 154 than at 140 and 147 in a way. But middleweight was too high. Then he fought Hilton in 1986 and that was a terrible beating.

Benitez eventually would lose a decision to Patrick Lawlor around 1990 or so....... Lawlor than beat a pitiful conditioned Duran in 1991......

the majority of robinsons losses were at the end of his career and that doesnt take away from his legacy.
