Is this true? Or was this just an excuse he made after losing?

...........Keep in mind that's Papa Gregorio talking there. If this were truly the case, one would think Benitez would have had more trouble making weight.

Yeah, I don't believe it myself. He probably didn't train as hard as he could have, but 1 week? That's bull****.

He looked pretty sharp to me. Regardless, he got paid well to come in ready. Excuse.

I think the extent of Benitez's poor training habits are exaggerated.

If he did it would only be because he knew he'd lose in my opinion (as opposed to being super-confident).

I always thought this was the case as well...Sort of a strange way of 'saving face'

Benitez was a very strange, immature kid. All kidding aside, I have read many times that he was naturally slow mentally as well. There is little question that he trained very lightly for the bout ... why is something only he knows ...

Its Benitez own fault if he didnt train right - tho he likely did - but the result would have been the same, Benitez couldnt beat Leonard on his best day.

I wouldn't say that. If they were both prime in shape welters and fought a series of bouts, Leonard wouldn't run the table.

I've read several articles indicating that he trained ****-poor for the Leonard fight (and others).
His father walked out of training camp prior to the fight.

.................Not training right is one thing, and I agree with what you're both saying (except maybe that Leonard wouldn't win them all), but the question at hand is whether he really trained for just six days.

I think it's probably more a case of him being in camp, but had only perhaps six good days of training. That could have been what Benitez Sr. meant.

If he just stumbled into the gym literally six days before the bout, there's no way he makes weight.

I remember that they showed a clip of Benitez training prior to the fight where he did a series of push-ups using his finger tips, using less fingers each time until it culminated in a one-finger push-up. So, I suspect that this story might have been concocted after the fact.
