Did Williams getting shot effect him at all?

  1. No it did not effect him in the slightest.

  2. Yes. It goes without saying that you'll never be the same after going through something like that.

On November 29, 1964, Cleveland Williams was shot by highway patrolman following an altercation.
"The bullet moved across Williams's intestines, and lodged against his right hip. Williams ultimately had to undergo four operations in the next seven months for colon damage and an injured right kidney. The right kidney of Williams was too damaged and not working, and had to be removed in June 1965. Doctors could not take out the patrolman's bullet, which had broken his right hip joint and caused partial paralysis of some of Williams' hip muscles.

The injury, surgeries and subsequent convalescence caused Williams to lose over 60 pounds, and over 17 months of his career." He also died not once, not twice, not thrice, not 4 times, not 5 times, but SIX times on the operating table.

Williams had a tremendous physical constitution. Physically he was a remarkable specimen. It was a miracle he survived that’s for certain. Williams was a physical miracle man all along. I don’t believe anyone normal could have survived the shooting. But there were clues Williams had great powers of recovery.

The hammering he took from Satterfeild could have ended his career but he dusted himself off and started all over again. Then Sonny almost brained him. A shattering loss but what a war!

Unbelievably Williams dusted himself off again to set off on another run like nothing had happened. As a prospect, just as impressive as before only more famous. Then Sonny walloped him again. Real spanking that one. Again Williams dusted himself off for the third time. after this (the third time of asking), big cat comes back from another career ending beating like a Phoenix from the flames to propel himself against rated fighters this time!

Incredibly Williams, who had only previously beaten ham and eggers, began scoring respectable points wins and draws against rated fighters like Daniels and Machen alongside a close loss to Terrell. What a turn around!

Then there was the gun shot wounding. It’s unbelievable. Yet Still he recoverers and with half his insides missing Williams gets into magnificent physical shape, he’s like an Adonis again! All carved and chiselled, muscles bulging like nothing ever happened.

AND still Williams put a run together beating guys. Poor Tod Herring didn’t know what hit him. Generous Todd had donated blood to save Williams and was rewarded with a crushing knockout defeat (big cat style) in Williams comeback fight. Another hometown run gathers speed until Ali gets him. It’s another beating. His forth and this time you would think this could be it but Williams gets going again!

Sadly Williams begins to pick up losses on this last leg of the journey but he’s fighting good fighters like Chuvalo, Mac Foster, Cleroux, Al blue Lewis so there is no shame there. He still wins more than he loses and he can still knockout guys with losing records like nobody’s business. Williams even outpoints young guns Terry Daniels and Ted Gullick. Daniels beat Gullick to get a shot at Joe Frazier but alas there was no shot for Williams beating those two. Williams is getting old by 1972. He even finishes his long career on a three fight win streak!

They should make a film about the big cat. And when they do I’m taking popcorn!

Getting shot doesn't help a professional athlete, that's for sure.

The shooting can’t improve things but does anybody think Williams would certainly beat Chuvalo, Mac Foster, Al Blue Lewis, Bob Cleroux and Al Jones BEFORE the gunshot wound?

Without seeing them, I actually think Williams wins against Ted Gullick and Terry Daniels after the shooting were about as good as beating Billy Daniels twice on points before the shooting.

How much better was Billy Daniels compared to Terry and Ted?

I remember reading that "Big Cat" was hit in the gut with a .357 round, the exact opposite of the type of rounds police typically used up until fairly recently in most place (9mm). A pretty large caliber bullet with a lot of stopping force behind it.

I dont see how it could not? We are talking about the pinacle of professional sports were every single percent of performance makes a huge difference!
Just because he looked the same on the outside doesnt mean he can perform the same. His core muscles and abdominal wall were torn into by a bullet, then cut open during 4 surgeries (probably in a much more invasive way than modern surgery methods), probably leaving large amounts of scar tissue and compromising the muscle for ever.

His hip bone was damaged, his hip muscles paralized.
All things being equal(which they may not have been, he could have picked up some great training methods during his rehabilitation) that would badly damage a fighter. Core and hips are vital to boxing(shoulders as well)

That must make a big hole. How he got over it I don’t know. Williams was not normal.

It was a .357 magnum that he got shot with, he's lucky he survived. This must be the dumbest post I ever saw.
