Did Wlad's win help or hurt his legacy?

so lets get this straight, whne he throws haye all over the ring, hayes pathetic for flopping around the ring and wlad showed how brilliant he is

yet when he does the same to povetkin he is over rated, boring, priotecting his chin??

say what you want about haye, but he tried to mazke their fight a fight - wlad done his usual jab grab routine which quite frankly, is abiout as intresting as watching 2 kids push eachother and swear instead of actually fighting

id love to see wlad try this jab clinch game with lewis - he'd have been ko'd before the night was finished

 

He got the 'W' against Ibragimov. What did that fight do for his legacy? Nothing. It had a negative effect on it. That night he was ousted by HBO , had HW boxing killed in Madison Square Garden and generally caused the death of the HW division.
He got the win , but the victory didn't improve his legacy or paint himself in a positive light in the slightest.
The Iggy fight turned Americans off him and the Povetkin fight has caused Europeans to go off him.

3 kd's were throat gags, elbows, throws etc. This fight harmed his legacy. Its as plain to see as the blue sky.

 

Added to it, obviously.

 

Personally i don't care how wlad wins, just that he does.

 

Wlad deserves all the criticism he recieves for how he fought Povetkin. I'm a huge fan of Wlad and I found myself rooting for Povetkin by the end of the fight.The fight was painful to sit through and Wlad deserves the blame for it.

If Wlad would have thrown a few more pucnhes and did less holding than he could have knocked Povetkin out and a lot of the critiicism wouldn't be there.

Having said that, I think in time this fight will clearly help Wlad's career. When people rate and compare fighters throughout history they look at wins and losses much more than how entertaining the fights were.

Povetkin was one of and possibly the top contender and Wlad dominated him. Thats whats going to be remembered in years to come. Just look at Wlad's wins over Sultan and Haye as examples. Those fights stunk as well but now they are seen as some of Wlad's top wins and the other issues receive less attention.

Right now people are criticizing and complaining about Wlad and the fight but as time goes by there will be less of that and more emphasis will be put on Wlad dominating a top contender.

 

The circumstances of the win wont be forgotten and people will remember the manor of the victory.
People dont look back and say ,Bowe has two solid wins over top contender Golota or Byrd was able to stop the hard as nails Vitali.
Winning in style is more important than getting a win by whatever means necessary and that fight will never be seen as anything other than the awful , foul-fest that it was.

 

Its possible Wlad's legacy gets hurt more than helped by his performance Saturday but I don't think it will.

Clearly, Wlad won't go down as the Gatti of the heavyweight division and from that standpoint the fight will hurt him but he's done this enough in the past that he will always be known as a safety first boring heavyweight.

If you go by his all-time rating than I just don't think style points are going to carry a lot of weight. We see that with recent heavyweight greats- Tyson is known as an attacking and exciting heavyweight while Lewis was seen as Wlad-like and most people will rate Lewis ahead of Tyson.

I'm not sure you're examples fit here either. Byrd and Bowe both have asteriks next to those wins but I think thats because they both won fights that they were losing and the losers of those fights basically gave away their wins. Wlad may have stunk the place up but he still totally dominated Povetkin.

 

He dominated through fouls allowed by a corrupt ref. People know what they saw .It wasn't an honourable win and has had a negative effect on his legacy. Nothing good for Wlad has come from this. Thats all there is to it. End of story.

 

Fair enough but I disagree. Fightes from Greb to Ali to Hopkins have all fought either dirty, held, had some referee advantages, etc and they are seen as some of the greatest fighters in history.

What matters most is if you win or lose and Wlad not just won he dominated. Sure it wasn't pretty and Wlad should have been warned/penalized earlier and more often then he was. The fight sucked and Wlad clearly should have went for a ko instead of holding constantly.

I just think, in time, history will see this as another dominating win by Wlad over a top contender when its all said and done. Everything else will take a backseat to that.

 

Ali and Hopkins put on clincs and classic performances in their time and fought greats.
Wlad never fought another great or hall of famer in his life and lost badly to the best Superheavy he ever faced.
Thats the difference.

 

Ask yourself, "How would Manny Steward have viewed that performance?"

Being Wlad never fought an all-time great and how he beat Povetkin are two seperate issues. The point of guys like Greb and Ali is that its not necessarily how they won but that they did win that gets them rated highly, and obviously agaisnt stellar competition.

It seems we agree that Wlad won in a **** poor manner I think the difference is that you are focusing only on the tactics and not the fact he actually won and did so easily.

I'm simply saying that over time the manner he won will become secondary and the actual win will be the focus and I used guys like Greb, Ali, and more recently Hopkins to illustrate that.

 

The quality of performances will be remembered, to deny that would be silly.
The fact Wlad never put on a great display of boxing in his life will only highlight the stinkers he had for as long as he is relevant.

 

Huge fan, but pretty lousy and dirty performance by Wlad. He was
scared of getting KOed and almost did a few times when he was gassed.
I really expected a virtuoso performance from Wlad.
