He had his fair share of boring fights but the vast majority of the time the guy was enjoyable to watch.
Sort of. I liked some of his fights, most notably the fight with Mayweather, and the McGirt fights. He actually had a pretty good workrate, and for all the flack he gets at times about being a "runner", he was really more of a pocket fighter. I remember reading an article in The Ring when he got inducted in the HOF, and I think it described it well why some people found him so dull. His fights had this monotonous tone about it where he'd just outbox his opponents for 12 rounds. Predictable with little suspense, and he lacked the power and "oh, ****!" factor of a Roy Jones.
I consider him one of my favs. He's been in some boring fights but I've enjoyed watching Sweet Pea doing his thing. His great boxing skills and slick defense are, to me, pleasing to watch.
Yes and no..... Watching some of marvelous defensive moves was pretty cool and he did it like no one else...... But after awhile it did get boring. I trip out how loved he is on East boxing now days. Because when he was fighting a lot of fans disliked him and thought he was very boring, and not just people the people i know. Before the internet became big people use to write into ko,Ring,Boxing illustrated and talk about how boring Whittaker was and how he never knocked anyone out... Whittaker had decent power though and he did produce some big kos a few times, he was just content to go the distance and usually did in title fights. Lot of people didnt like his showboating and hotdog antics, but now you rarely here anyone say anything bad about him, its like boxing blasphemy.
Whitaker was fun to watch. Against mid-level guys he could get boring at times because they stood zero chance of winning and zero chance of being ko'd even though it was obvious from the first round who would win... Imagine if he had a little power, he could have been a contender for GOAT...l
The power in his left hand was decent. He rocked Chavez in the 8th round with it, unified the LW title on a single punch, turned the whole Hurtado fight around with it.
Best defensive fighter I've ever seen. Reflexes unmatched by anyone I've seen. Fought everyone who wanted some and did it anywhere they wanted it. He just knew that people were not on his level. Ask the older mayweather's where they got thier son's inside game from. They got it from that man and if you have watched roger and sr fight, you know dam well they didn't pass thier stuff on to floyd. They passed pernell's stuff and I guess that's because they were so impressed at how Sweet P handled roger wit ease like so many others Unlike the punks of today, He didn't shy away from fighting young lions such as a young oscar and felix on the backside of his career either. Unlike others I know who have promoters who play a name game to stay fighting old washed up fighters (basically saying **** the boxing fans).
Not a dumb question alot of fans found Whittaker boring, even the knowledgeable fans.... My pops really knows his stuff and is a hardcore fan ,but after awhile he used to pass on watching Whittaker fights, unless he was involved in a super fight.. With a Chavez,Mcgirt,or ODLH.
He had to catch guys just right for it to do anything. Imo, he had below average power, he seemed to push his punches...And as skilled as he was, he was not a finisher primarily because of his lack of power... But you are right, he had just enough to surprise some guys...
