I did. Dont get me wrong I appreciate his talent, but there were far too many times in his fights where there would be lulls in the action cause he refused to take the lead. It could sometimes become quite tedious to watch imo.
i agree with you. while i appreciate the speed and skills jones possessed, i never became a hardcore fan of his for that reason. i think jones had the power and skill to knock out the majority of opponents he faced, but instead of blowing them out of the water (like he did in his grduge match against montell griffin) he often opted to potshot and toy with his opponent. it just bothered me that a dominant jones round consisted of 8-11 blows landed and a lot of posing, but that still doesn't extract from his greatness, and he is without a doubt one of the greatest fighters of my generation. his style just didn't really appeal to me. and i think the fact that no one could really compete with him in his prime, is the reason a lot of his fights seemed boring. the discrepency in talent between jones and his opponent was often so large that most matches seemed pointless
Anybody who is anybody..? and who has a brain. Knows that Roy Jones was deeply affected by Gerald Mcclenlan vs Nigel Benn fight and out come. And was never the same fighter, after that point. He stated it himself..? He stated that his dad trainned a killing/fighting machine..? aka R.J. Roy Jones father used abuse and violence for his training methods to train young Roy Jones Junior. "He would make him bob and weave under planks with nails hammered into them, he would train his defence by swinging mental bars at him" Roy Jones carried allot of fighters and instead of hurting them, he would just put on abit of show..? He was good enough to do this. Note: You stupid yanks learni about your own fighters.
this thread never asked why he fought the way he did, all the op asked was if we found his fights "teidious" to watch, which according to some rang true. this is only a matter of opinion though, and opinion is subjective. i can understand why roy would want to carry his opponents, just like ray robinson after killing jimmy doyle in the ring, and that's cool with me. with all the power and athleticism roy had i think its very feasible he could have killed men in the ring. however, jones didn't look so merciful against former lightweight vinny paz (who had previously suffered a broken neck) in a bout which took place 4 months after the benn mcclellan fight. so i'm not so sure that was his motive in fighting the way he did. and if roy was so cognizant of the dangers of boxing you'd think for his own sake that he would hang em up at this point in his career and avoid pugilistic dimentia.
Roy Jones was deeply affected by Benn McClellan? Bull****. I don't even remember hearing about it at the time, I only heard about it many years later on ESB. US boxing fans rarely paid attention to fights outside of the country, because the sports press paid them no attention.
Roy Jones is a fighter, not a US boxing fan..? you ****ing idiot. So you did'nt pay attention to G-man..? you ****ing mong. 5min 10 second mark, he talks about Roy Jones. [ame]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=LGz-unNi1dU[/ame]
I'd question whether it was purely to do with the McClellan fight. I just think its Roy's mentality as a fighter. The Thulani Malinga fight wasn't particularly exciting besides the finish imo.
He's not a fighter I'll watch regularly. I appreciate his otherworldly ability (At his best), but he could be a little...tedious, yeah.
