I think he just enjoyed the spot-light, time, and fight. So he carried opponents for the fun of it. When guys really came after him (at his peak of his powers), he handled them. It was up to the opponent to get him fired up. But on that note, that's where some of the "Competition" debate thing comes in. Did he do enough to get the big fights if they were out there? He did things in the ring though that I've seen from no other fighter in history. For that, I watched. O', and in the end, all of his prime fights together made for a great H.L. real. __ So I agree with this........HG = Herbert G. Goldman {Boxing Historian} KD -- A couple of years ago you published your own greatest pound-for-pound list in International Boxing digest. You had Roy Jones Jr. at the top of your list. You’ve received much criticism from historians and others—typically older folks—What about Jones’ abilities and accomplishments prompted you to make such a bold statement? And how do you compare greatness in boxers? And would you still put Jones up at the top? HG -- This content is protected
He just wasn't that good. His power faded at 175 especially against bigger LHW's like david telesco who he could not even wobble with his best punch. and you guys saying he didnt want to hurt any of his opponents lmao he had no problem knocking out 5'4 vinnie paz through the ropes who just came back from a broken spine
Benn wanted The jones fight big time... Even paying him the respect as the best in the division.. Jones wanted no part of Nigel Benn and generally didn't give us the fights we should have saw. Damage limitation and it showed throughout his career. Shame cos he was superb at times.
You can't rank a fighter purely on skillset. Unless you match those skills with the very best of your era you'll never know how they'll match up. Yes Jones was sublimly skilled, but I'd look like the next Sugar Ray if I was fighting my father in law!!
i found roy jones very entertaining to watch, especially when he stopped taking banned anablic steroids and started getting his glass jaw smashed to smitherines.
Sometimes his activity level was definitely frustrating, but for the most part I appreciated and enjoyed watching.
