in fact, it continues to this day, probably the defeat of Jake Paul will be proof for his critics that he was overrated in 1986 but...
Tyson fought 37 fights in the 1980s, 10 for belts. This is 80% of his career actually, but he is judged for the remaining 20%.

Two defenses of the Heavyweight crown, lost it in a virtual shut out & KO to Buster friggin’ Douglas, never re-gained it. That’s under-achieving if ever I saw it.

From Marvis Frazier to Michael Spinks , Mike Tyson was the biggest star in sports, transcended the game deep into the general public's psych , his matches were can't miss events, his ring walk the dominant moment in sports and he was considered unbeatable ... his speed, his power, his killer instinct, hie mystic made him a cross over global superstar. When he lost to Douglas it may have been the greatest upset of all time ... keep in mind this was pre-internet world and so much of what went on with him from lack of focus to true late night behavior was not really known to the general public a it may have been today ... at the time he was the biggest star in the world and one of the most feared, highly rated fighter ever ..

Smith, Thomas, Tucker, Briggs, Holmes, Tubbs, Spinks, Bruno, Williams ... that counts as nine defenses ...

I was in college when Tyson came up. Back then of course there was no public internet, so we got all our reports on prospects from boxing mags and some of the big city papers. And of course the weekly boxing shows on ESPN and USA network, and the intermittent weekend shows on the major broadcast networks.

Anyway, around 1984 or so there was all this hype about this killer puncher out of upstate New York, who was blowing away one fighter after another, with many touting him as having a good shot at becoming the youngest champ ever. The first time I think I actually saw Tyson fight live was the Berbick fight and he sure did live up to the hype....at least up until Douglas. But that's another story.

Was Tyson bigger than Larry Bird ? Michael Jordan ? Kareem ? (whoever was the MLB or NFL star in the 80s) ?

It's like, Tyson with all of his fidgeting was so hard and so great, but, at the same time, that just obscures the fact that there were other really big challenges at the time, like if you had to rematch Bald Ball. People from nowadays forget that.

Bowe beat Holyfield & made two defenses. Lewis made I don’t know how many off-hand.

there was a Time when Iron Mike truly was "the Baddest Man on the Planet", in his absolute best moment he could have felled any man out there, in the Ring or on the Street.

yes eventually someone else will always come along, but for a period Mike Tyson was that guy.

From a UK/European perspective the only current sportsman on the same level of fame was probably only Diego Maradona, Tyson was that big. As mentioned earlier, Tyson vs Ali debates were commonplace, as were Tyson vs Bruce Lee.

I'm sorry but I don't understand...Which of Tyson, Bowe and Lewis' defenses do you consider true and which are alphabetical and why? does Tyson have anyone like the broken Ferguson or Dokes in the defense of the alphabet? has anyone like Botha, Phil Jackson?
