It invalidates it because he's making a middleweight championship one pound over 154. It's honestly laughable. If his ***** ass wants to weigh 155 then do it, but don't expect someone else to not weigh in at the middleweight limit. I don't care if its been done before its pathetic. Some people have no pride.

There shouldn't be a catchweight for title fights in an ideal world, but at the same time this is the current state of boxing politics.

Cotto has had the catchweight demand thrust on him when he was the B-side against Pacquiao. He is the A-side now and wants all the advantages in negotiations that come along with that... It's the way it is and nothing new.

When Hopkins was the long reigning MW champ for years in 2004, he conceded a 157-pound catchweight to the smaller Oscar to make that fight happen.

The answer is quite simple, then...

If you don't feel comfortable and healthy at the contracted weight limit being discussed, then don't fight him.

    Problem solved.

    -----------

    Negotiations in boxing are real.

If Golovkin looks healthy at 155 and looks to be able to make 154, I say bring on a Mayweather vs Golovkin fight. It'd be awesome. As of now though, I don't believe he can make 154 without being drained or seriously weakened.

    Coming from a Floyd fan.

According to you guys, GGG will destroy Cotto at any way. So it should be ok. Me personally I hate catchweights. Am a Cotto fan but this is bs. but then again Freddie Roach is famous for draining his fighters opponents.
With that said, if GGG agrees to fight Cotto at 156 why not take his strap also. Is only fair to GGG.

The fact that Cotto was a 140 pounder means squat. He's not a 140 pounder anymore. He's a full fledged Jr Middleweight.

This could be his big break, he might not ever get a ppv or cotto payday ever again. So Roach and cotto are trying to take advantage of ggg's desire for a big fight and payday. It's pathetic.

So Cotto should be looking out for the finances and legacy of Golovkin over himself?

You are reaching, my man... for the stars, too.

Exactly, I don't like catch weights either but the fact is, they exist, so fighters will continue to make use of something that is there if it will benefit them. It's not a whole lot different than other negotiable factors that can affect the outcome of a fight i.e. ring sizes, stringent testing, gloves, locations, etc. All these are being played out and more that affect the favoritism of one fighter or the other in every major fight, and the fighters will always decide what they are willing to put up or can handle just as they always have.

 the boxing community is trying to put Cotto on the witness protection program just to avoid fighting Golovkin. Its comical.

Funny how when mayweather and pac were pulling this **** it was pathetic, now that the beloved cotto is pulling the same bull**** theres nothing wrong with it.

Trying to justify everything by citing 'politics' makes you part of the problem.

Politics explains the situation, it doesn't excuse it.

    Just imo

Middleweight champion who has never fought at middleweight
Jr middleweight champion who has never fought at Jr middleweight other than the time he fought the middleweight champion who has never fought at middleweight

I don't really get why boxing bothers with weight divisions anymore, everyone ignores them.

What we have is income divisions. Fighters will fight each other based on how many tickets they're projected to sell and the more popular one whips out some arbitrary weight limit.

    He's the MIDDLEWEIGHT champion

This doesn't even have **** to do with Golovkin, why is the MIDDLEWEIGHT champion refusing to have a single fight at MIDDLEWEIGHT (160 lbs)?

Fight a top middleweight at 160 lbs or vacate the belt

We don't need one of the most historical divisions in boxing put on the shelf indefinitely because some diva f4ggot caught up in the Floyd/Manny saga showed up

exile cotto back to 147 to be with his own kind
