The Ring title previously couldn't get stripped unless a fighter left the weight class until the awful arbitrary changes made this year. Also, the reason the two weren't equivalent for the flyweight and light heavyweight titles in the recent past is because The Ring simply decided to ignore existing lineages when the ratings were reestablished (the most memorable being Jones/Michalczewski). See the second half of this article for a good overview of The Ring/lineal divide: http://web.archive.org/web/20081205115749/http://www.maxboxing.com/Cliff/Rold040908.asp

As noted above and earlier in the thread though, The Ring's recent changes should be seen as completely severing the connection between their belt and the lineal title. They may as well be another sanctioning body at this point.

Another thing I get from this thread is that the Ring and lineal used to be the same, but not anymore because of recent changes.

Right, they were very close to the same and the two had converged on many of the things that initially made them different when The Ring's ratings restarted (save maybe Erdei and Pascal/Hopkins/Dawson), but they weren't quite the same.

One difference persistent difference was rules for vacating a belt, something about which there's no universally agreed upon standard for lineal titles. This is why some still Floyd as the lineal champ at welterweight, dating back to his victory over Baldomir. Others still regard him as lineal due to his victory over Mosley, something else The Ring precluded by deciding that Margarito-Mosley should not be for that title.

if a lineal champ loses this title, is it possible that he retrieves it back?

Then what makes someone the lineal champ, and how do we know someone is the lineal champ if there's no physical belt?

I think Wlad has been the champion since he beat Chagaev. As far as many people are concerned, myself included, Wlad has defended 'the' crowd 5 times. Before that, he was nothing but a beltholder.

the ring belt is just as worthless as all the other belts now that they have changed the way the award it and brought in rules to strip fighters of it
