Someone in my Mayweather thread said that Pacquiao wasn't a world champion, just a titleholder. Well, I'd like to know the difference.

Sergio Martinez is a world champion. Everyone else in the division is a belt holder.

To be a world champion you have to beat the man who beat the man. For instance Cotto for the majority of his career was a belt holder because he never beat an established champion, usually won a vacant title or beat a guy who won a vacant title.

Not being a world champion doesnt mean you arent a good fighter see Cotto. But you should be able trace your belt back more than a few fights before it was vacated.

Oh and all vacated means is one of the orga wanted you or someone else to have the title. Usually you dont earn it, they stripped some poor guys because he wouldnt fight who they wanted him to fight.

Officially nothing, unofficially the world champion is normally the lineal champion or #1 in the division.

only means something to a handful of internet posters.

In the real world the champ is just the best of the title holders.

In other words, a world champion is the guy who beat the previous champion, who won the title by beating the previous champion?

Idealy, or someone who stands above the others in the division as the best. Smaller fighters move up divisions so often they don't keep a lineal champion for long.

Everybody knows the world champion, regardless of who else has a belt.

Pacquiao is on the level of an ATG world champion.

A titleholder is someone like Paulie Malignaggi.

The best example would be the current super middleweight division. Carl Froch is a title holder as he owns the IBF strap. But Andre Ward is the real world champion. He has all the other meaningful belts and a head to head victory over Froch.

the champ who beats the previous champ is the linear champion

a title holder is someone who wins a strap

a world champion can be considered a title holder and a title holder can be considered a world champ but to most the world champ is the best in that division ... the one with the most belts and the best victories

A World Champion is universally recognized as the best fighter in the division.

A titleholder is anyone that has an ABC belt.

World champions are legit lineal champs. Titleholders just have a paper belt.

Opinion, really. But like everybody said, "world champion" is the lineal champion, OR to some people sometimes the universal #1 of the division depending on the person.

A titlist is any holder of the WBC, WBA, IBF, or WBO.

For example, when Donaire beat Darchinyan at flyweight, he did not win the lineal title, but he had defeated the titlist and consensus #1 flyweight. He was not lineal champion, but I think it would be fair to anoint him as the world champion rather than just a titlist.

When Donaire beat Mathebula at 122, he beat a titlist. He already had a title, so he was a unifed titlist, not world champion.

When he beat Nishioka, the RING magazine called it for the lineal title, and because Nishioka was the #1 in the division and Donaire was either #2 or #3, he became the lineal world champion.

In my opinion it's just a word, and knowing the situation is all that matters.
